Tiffany will star as Linda Gustafson in the aerobics-inspired Spandex The Musical during a 10-day run at Off-Broadway’s Asylum NYC

Tiffany tells PEOPLE the role mirrors her own journey of reinvention and includes Easter eggs for longtime fans

Tiffany is stepping into a brand-new spotlight.

The multi-platinum pop star — who became a household name in the late 1980s with chart-topping hits including “I Think We’re Alone Now” and “Could’ve Been” — is set to make her New York theater debut this fall in the new Off-Broadway production Spandex The Musical, PEOPLE can exclusively announce.

The singer, 54, will lead the cast of the aerobics-inspired musical during a 10-day limited engagement at Asylum NYC beginning Sept. 17, with opening night set for Sept. 19.

“Stepping onto the Off-Broadway stage in Spandex The Musical feels like a true full-circle moment for me,” Tiffany tells PEOPLE in a statement. “Before music came into my life, I was a dancer and an actor, and those dreams were put on hold when ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ took off and my recording career began.”

“I’ve always believed the right role would find me, and the moment I read the script, I knew Linda was that character,” she continues.

In the musical, Tiffany stars as Linda Gustafson, a housewife who befriends former gymnastics prodigy-turned-aerobics instructor Lorraine Stubenski (Sims Lamason). Alongside Lorraine and her protégé Dori Jenson (Catherine Ashmore Bradley), Linda takes on the gym’s villainous owner by competing in the fictional 1988 Crystal Light National Aerobics Championship, hosted by television personality Alan Thicke.

Described as “half The Karate Kid underdog story, half A Chorus Line,” the show celebrates the colorful world of late-‘80s aerobics culture — complete with plenty of neon and spandex.

For Tiffany, the role also mirrors her own life in unexpected ways.

“Just as Linda discovers a new passion through aerobics that changes her life, I’ve found exciting new passions beyond music through my Pop Life cookbook, ‘Let’s Food With Tiffany’ events, and now returning to acting on stage,” she says. “It’s a reminder that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.”

“There are so many wonderful parallels between Linda’s journey and my own, and I’m thrilled the producers have even woven in some fun Tiffany Easter eggs that I know longtime fans are going to love.”

The performer says making her Off-Broadway debut is especially meaningful because the production will also give back, with a portion of proceeds benefiting Children’s Miracle Network —a nonprofit that raises funds for children’s hospitals and helps provide critical medical care for kids across North America.

“Making my Off-Broadway debut with such a funny, heartfelt and uplifting show is truly a dream come true,” Tiffany says. “I’m also incredibly proud that Spandex The Musical is partnering with Children’s Miracle Network, with a portion of the proceeds helping children and families in need.”

“Giving back has always been close to my heart, so being able to combine my love of performing with a cause that means so much to me makes this experience even more special,” she adds. “I can’t wait for audiences to experience the laughs, the music, the ‘80s nostalgia and, of course, plenty of spandex!”

Spandex The Musical has been developed in productions in Minneapolis and New York City with Crunch Fitness, who will again partner on the production.

The musical features a book, music and lyrics by Daniel F. Levin, music by Julian Blackmore and a book by Annie Grunow. Liz Piccoli directs and choreographs the production.

Nawaf Nooruddin and William Boyajian will also star in the show, with additional casting to be announced.
