The 2025 college football season has been an unforgiving slog for Boston College, which enters its Week 11 matchup against SMU at 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the ACC.

If there’s negativity around the program, the Eagles’ coach hasn’t seen it. Or, at the very least, he doesn’t like hearing about it.

During a media availability on Tuesday, Nov. 4, second-year Boston College coach Bill O’Brien chided a reporter who asked if he had a message for the fans as the team tries to break out of an eight-game losing streak.

ā€œI’m glad you’re down. I’m not down. Nobody’s down,ā€ O’Brien said. ā€œWe’re fighting. We’re competing. It’s the second year of this program, Mike. You always come in here with these down questions. You show up once a month or something like that. You come in here with these down questions. I’m not down. I don’t know what year you graduated from BC, but this is a program that we’re building.ā€

O’Brien’s frustration comes in the middle of a taxing two-month stretch.

The Eagles are winless this season against FBS opponents, with their lone victory coming in Week 1 against FCS Fordham. After losses to Michigan State and Cal by a combined six points in the first month of the season, Boston College’s defeats have gotten more lopsided of late. Each of its past five losses have come by at least two touchdowns. Its five ACC losses have come by an average of 20 points. The Eagles are 123rd of 136 FBS programs in scoring defense, giving up an average of 33.3 points per game.

Their schedule will only get so much easier, either, with a game Saturday against a 6-3 SMU team coming off a win against No. 18 Miami, which will be followed by a matchup with No. 14 Georgia Tech.

ā€œNobody here is down,ā€ O’Brien said. ā€œWe’re positive. We’re going to show up and play our asses off against SMU. You can go out there in your dark, clouded world or whatever it is and do what you want to do. We’re not down. The sun is up and we’re fighting. That’s my message to the fans.ā€

Though Boston College is a proud program historically, it has been mired in mediocrity the past 15 years, having never won more than seven games in a season since 2009. This season, though, could represent a new low. The Eagles haven’t won fewer than two games in a season since 1978 and have won fewer than three games in a season only once since 1989.

O’Brien, a Massachusetts native who previously had success as a head coach at Penn State and with the Houston Texans, had a solid debut season with the Eagles in 2024, going and making the Pinstripe Bowl.
