Warning: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of Outlander, now streaming on Starz.
Outlander came to an end after eight seasons on Friday, May 15
Star Caitríona Balfe broke down the series finale episode and admitted that she doesn't "really know what happened" for Claire and Jamie in the end
"Are they alive in this time? Are they alive in a different time? I don't know," Balfe said
Outlander has officially come to an end, but even Caitríona Balfe isn't totally sure how the story wrapped up.
In the final episode, which premiered Friday, May 15, on Starz, Jamie (Sam Heughan) faced the battle that Frank's history book said would see him die, but he survived and reunited with Claire (Balfe), who joyfully proclaimed that her husband's account was wrong.
The battle wasn't really over, though, as Jamie was shot and killed in a final act of defiance from the British. As the gunshot rang out, Claire felt it in her chest too and ran to Jamie, whom she found dead.
A montage of the decade-long love story the series explored between the couple then played — and a scene from the show's first episode finally confirmed that it was indeed Jamie's ghost looking at Claire in her window — but the final scene of the episode was a twist. Claire was laying next to Jamie's body, and before the screen went to black, both of their eyes opened and they both sucked in a breath.

Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts reminded fans that "there's magic in Outlander," but he would not confirm or deny what the final scene means. "I'm not going to tell any single fan how to interpret that last beat," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Balfe, 46, was more candid about her interpretation of the episode. "It's so heartbreaking for Claire, obviously, when she feels [Jamie’s] dead. I'm not sure that I fully understand the ending," she told EW. "I don't really know what happened."
"I thought it was really cool that they went and did the Jamie ghost thing again, and that in some way, maybe, he was calling her, or he pulled her into his orbit," she said. "But as to what happens when they're lying on the stone, I don't know."

As for whether the final scene meant that Claire brought Jamie back from the dead, Balfe said, "I would have loved for it to have been a bit more mystical, and that Claire had more agency in bringing him back."
"I think in some way, yes, she does. But then it's like, are they alive in this time? Are they alive in a different time? I don't know," she said.
She revealed that she played the scene as if Claire had also died from the loss of Jamie. "I think that's what it is," she told EW. "That's how I was sort of playing it. He is her home. It's very Romeo and Juliet, almost, they die together on this altar or this stone. It’s what you hope happens in Romeo and Juliet. We get to change the Shakespearean ending."
Outlander is now streaming on Starz.
