Celebrate 35 Years of Point Break: Watch It in Theaters or Stream Free on Pluto TV

If you need an excuse to rewatch Point Break, this weekend has you covered.

Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 action classic is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a return to theaters, giving fans a chance to see Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze’s surfing-meets-bank-robbery thriller on the big screen once again. The movie will screen nationwide on August 16 and 19 in a new 4K restoration.

But you don’t have to leave the house (or pay a dime) to watch it.

Point Break is currently available to stream for free on Pluto TV, making this a particularly good time to revisit one of the most entertaining action movies of the 1990s.

And there’s a pretty good reason to put it on the list.

Point Break Is One of the Greatest Action Movies Ever

StudioBinder recently included Point Break at No. 38 on its list of the 50 best action movies of all time. The ranking praises the movie’s combination of surfing, crime, extreme sports, and high-octane action, while recognizing Bigelow’s distinctive approach to the genre.

The setup is still a great one.

Reeves plays Johnny Utah, a rookie FBI agent who goes undercover to investigate a group of surfers suspected of robbing banks while wearing masks of former U.S. presidents. His investigation leads him directly to Bodhi, the charismatic thrill-seeker played by Swayze.

What starts as an undercover assignment becomes increasingly complicated as Utah gets pulled into Bodhi’s world.

There’s surfing, skydiving, bank robberies, shootouts, and one of the most memorable extreme-sports sequences of the era.

It also has the kind of cast that makes a 35-year-old action movie particularly easy to revisit, with Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros, and Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis appearing alongside Reeves and Swayze.

The 35th Anniversary Screening Has Something Extra

The new theatrical release isn’t simply a matter of putting an old movie back on a screen.

The August 16 and 19 screenings will feature a new 4K restoration, giving the film’s surfing sequences and California locations a much sharper presentation than many fans have seen at home.

There’s also a pretty great connection to the original production.

The screenings will include an exclusive introduction from surfing legend Matt Archbold, who served as Swayze’s surf double during the movie. Archbold also helped teach Reeves, Swayze, Kiedis, and other members of the cast how to surf for the film. He’ll share behind-the-scenes stories from the production as part of the anniversary event.

You Can Watch Point Break for Free Right Now

If you’re not near one of the participating theaters, there’s another option.

Point Break is currently available through Pluto TV’s free, ad-supported streaming library. That means you can watch the movie at home without paying for another streaming subscription.

Point Break originally arrived in theaters on July 12, 1991, and while it wasn’t an enormous box-office phenomenon at the time, its reputation has only grown over the years. Rotten Tomatoes currently gives the film a 68% Tomatometer score and a 79% audience score.
