Danny Green on how Lakers should build around Luka Doncic
This summer could be the first one during which the Los Angeles Lakers can truly start to build a championship-caliber team around Luka Doncic. They're projected to have up to approximately $50 million in salary cap space, and while some of that will likely be used to re-sign some of their own players, they could also use a portion of that space to bring in at least one outside player.
The Lakers have some deficiencies throughout their roster, especially in terms of depth, athleticism, defense and 3-point shooting. Danny Green, who won an NBA championship with them in 2020, said during a recent appearance on ESPN L.A. radio that the Purple and Gold need to follow a specific blueprint in order to win it all with Doncic.

"Defensive guys, right? Defense and shooters," Green said on ESPN LA radio. "That's no real secret or science to it. If you wanna have a great winning team, you need some superstars and you need a good quality big man that can rebound and some 3-and-D guys around him. If you can get that at a good price, you have a good chance of being successful and winning some championships."
Green echoed a sentiment that is shared by many people. Los Angeles lacks two-way players, and two-way players, other than a team's main stars, are needed in order to win championships. When it won it all in 2020, it had two-way players such as Green, Avery Bradley, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Alex Caruso contributing alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
L.A. also needs some type of upgrade at the center position, whether that means replacing Deandre Ayton or keeping him and getting a quality backup. In a perfect world, the team would have someone at the 5 who is a scoring threat, as well as a shot-blocker and rebounder, but at a minimum, it needs a defensive-minded center with a high motor to patrol the paint.
