'DWTS' fan-favorite Andy Richter avoids elimination and charms his way to quarterfinals

Los Angeles — Andy Richter defied the odds yet again Tuesday night, escaping elimination after a night of raucous "Rock & Roll" themed performances on "Dancing with the Stars."
Richter, 59, and his partner, British dance pro Emma Slater, moderately impressed judges with their contemporary dance choreo to "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys. Still, there was no doubt they soared through to the quarterfinals thanks to the comedian's fierce fandom.
Richter has become the unexpected breakout star of the season and the ABC reality show's most successful one yet.
After the confetti settled, Richter told USA TODAY in the DWTS ballroom that, like every week, he was surprised that his talents earned him a spot in next week's episode – and that his knees hurt.
"My legs hold up through the whole dance, and then when we are talking, here is when my legs start to go 'let's go home,'" he quipped.
As for the episode's results, Richter added: "I'm always surprised. In some ways, it's ridiculous that I'm still here. But I'm very happy that I am."

Behind the scenes, where the show's controlled chaos was on full display, Richter and Slater could be seen rehearsing madly during commercial breaks.
This week's episode included not just individual dances from the pairs, but also featured two "team" performances choreographed to live sets by Kool & The Gang and Chicago.
Guest host Flava Flav watched on and doled out mostly positive scores seemingly indiscriminately, much to the chagrin of viewers.

Several players from the now World Series winning-Los Angeles Dodgers were in the stands, as were a handful of supportive spouses, including front-runner Whitney Leavitt's husband Conner Leavitt, who eagerly offered to take photos clad in fake tattoo sleeves and an '80s rocker wig.
Richter's wife, Jennifer Herrera, was also in attendance, flagging down Flava Flav for a picture post-show.

As the show moved into its second half of the season, riding a ratings wave and an increasingly viral presence on TikTok, the remaining couples will duke it out for the coveted mirror ball.
Richter's future remains uncertain, however, as he faces off against a noticeably more competitive batch of dancers. Viewers and contestants alike may begin to wonder just how far the "Fandies" will take their devotion.
