Halle Bailey is reflecting on life as a mom.

On Sunday, May 31, The Little Mermaidstar, 26, spoke to PEOPLE during The Peabody Awards, which were held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, describing motherhood as a “beautiful thing.”

Bailey, who shares son Halo, 2, with former partner DDG, described him as her “biggest blessing.” And when asked what kind of man she wants him to become, the star tells PEOPLE, “I guess I'm just trying to raise someone who's loving, who's kind, who is aware, who's intuitive. And he's all of those things.”

“I'm just hoping I'm doing my best,” she adds.

As for her favorite mom moments, Bailey loves affection from her little boy. “It's definitely the cuddles,” she says, adding that Halo is a “very clingy, like cuddly boy.”

The notoriously private star did not confirm she was expecting a baby throughout her entire pregnancy; however, she and former boyfriend, rapper DDG welcomed Halo in December 2023, revealing that they were now parents the following month.

“Even though we're a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me, was bring me my son.. welcome to the world my halo. The world is desperate to know you,” Bailey wrote on Instagram at the time.

As for the motivation behind keeping the baby's arrival a secret, at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards in March 2024, Bailey explained that had come from “a place of protection.”

“There was no way in hell I was going to share the biggest joy of my world with anyone,” she said. “Halo was my gift. He is the greatest blessing, and I had no obligation to expose him, me, or my family to that.”

In January 2024, The Color Purple actress also answered fan questions on Snapchat about how she was able to continue working while pregnant. She explained that it was “helpful” for her to “have something to promote.”

“it just helps my brain and to feel sane,” she added. “Because there's a lot of emotional vulnerability that you experience going through all of that.”

Bailey also said she “stayed off of all social media,” while pregnant.

Three months later, Bailey revealed in another video on her Snapchat that she'd been dealing with postpartum depression since becoming a mom and would “freak out” when separated from Halo for “more than 30 minutes.”

She also admitted that prior to having a child of her own, she “didn't realize how serious” postpartum depression was for new mothers.

“Now going through it, it almost feels like you're swimming in this ocean that's like the biggest waves you've ever felt and you're trying not to drown. And you're trying to come up for air,” she explained.

In October of that year, DDG announced his split from the star after more than two years of dating. He described the decision to part ways as “not easy,” but the “best path forward to both of us.”

Initially the pair's split seemed amicable, but they were both later granted restraining orders amid claims of domestic violence and a battle for custody of Halo. In August 2025, the former couple were also ordered by a judge to not share photos or videos of Halo on social media.

A few months later, in October 2025, Bailey and DDG had settled their custody dispute, with both dropping their restraining-order requests and agreeing on terms to co-parent.
