Emma D’Arcy and House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal are discussing the season 3 finale with Entertainment Weekly.

D’Arcy says the final death of the season ā€œcondemns Rhaenyra to the path she’s chosen.ā€

Looking ahead, season 4 is ā€œgoing to be even bigger,ā€ Condal teases.

This article contains spoilers for the House of the Dragon season 3 finale.

Heading into the third year of House of the Dragon, star Emma D’Arcy became interested in exploring what they called ā€œa movement towards tyranny, but in particular making that journey legible.ā€ With this season’s finale, that shift feels complete, especially with the death of a character that, the actor says, ā€œcondemns Rhaenyra to the path she’s chosen.ā€

D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Targaryen emerges before her people as the Black Queen of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a ruler now with a religious fervor. She dresses in black armor, shoulder plates in the likeness of dragon wings, Joan of Arc chainmail, touches of red, and her father’s gold crown — which D’Arcy sees as closer to warpaint.

Rhaenyra stands outside the church of the faith, having slaughtered the priests who refused to bless her coronation, and declares herself anointed by the gods of Old Valyria. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, speaking alongside D’Arcy on Friday during a season finale press conference, this marks ā€œa real seismic change, a sea change, in Rhaenyra’s relationship to her people.ā€

ā€œWe’d always looked at Rhaenyra being torn between Viserys’ [Paddy Considine] philosophy, which is somewhat embodied by Mysaria [Sonoyo Mizuno], it’s somewhat embodied by Alicent [Olivia Cooke] in her conversations with them, and then Daemon [Matt Smith], which is the fire and blood, rule by dragons, uncompromising,ā€ he says. ā€œIt’s very, very black-and-white to him and his empire-building and his dreams and ambitions and all the reasons that Viserys passed him over to be king.ā€

Rhaenyra long questioned whether Westeros would accept a woman as its ruler. And as she learns that Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) has re-emerged with his dragon, Sunfyre, she ā€œthrows in totally with Daemon in the end,ā€ Condal continues, ā€œthinking that that’s her only way to be seen as legitimate to all of the lords and the people that she’s so reliant on.ā€

What seals her fate is the death of Helaena (Phia Saban).

The character was ā€œthe moral heart of the show,ā€ D’Arcy says, ā€œmaybe the only character who has a proximity to power but remains uncontaminated.ā€ Yet the former queen, now pregnant with a son, Maelor, fell into a deep despair in Rhaenyra’s captivity, a potential hostage in the Red Keep to draw out Aegon and ensure Alicent fulfills her mission. At her lowest point, she leaps to her death from a window, impaled on the spikes on the ground below. Her suicide note takes the form of a prophetic tapestry she sewed all season.

ā€œI don’t know where we go from here,ā€ D’Arcy comments, ā€œbut I imagine it’s likely to be impossible in her relationship with Alicent, which I think also means Helaena’s death condemns Rhaenyra to be alone in her pursuit for power. I was thinking about her rejection of the Seven and murder of the High Septons and this attempt to reject other legitimizing institutions.ā€

Over the course of the season, Rhaenyra isolates herself from Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) by not legitimizing his bastard sons, from Lady Baela (Bethany Antonia) and Rhaena Targaryen (Phoebe Campbell) with the Sheepstealer incident, and from the lords and ladies of King’s Landing with the rat feast. She isolates herself even from Mysaria by sending her away from the castle, as well as someone like Ulf the White (Tom Bennett), who betrayed Rhaenyra at the Battle of Tumbleton after he was denied the comforts and respect of a lordship.

ā€œIn a funny way,ā€ D’Arcy says, ā€œHelaena’s power of sight is another kind of institution of legitimacy. I guess I just love the simplicity of looking at a document that could be hugely illuminating but choosing to chuck it on the floor.ā€

House of the Dragon season 4, confirmed to be the final season of the Game of Thrones prequel, will premiere sometime in 2028. Condal says season 3 is ā€œsetting things upā€ to pay off down the line. ā€œSeason 4 is going to be even bigger,ā€ the showrunner teases. ā€œWe have new characters and new dragons and new locations, all to come,ā€ he adds, ā€œthat I think are gonna make it a very worthy final season.ā€

He acknowledges Rhaenyra’s turn toward tyranny will likely draw parallels to the downfall of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) on the original Game of Thrones, whether intentional or subliminal.

ā€œThis is one of those existential themes that goes across this entire universe, which is the draw of the Iron Throne, what it does to a person in its thrall or the people that are trying to get to it,ā€ Condal explains. ā€œThe big difference between Rhaenyra and Daenerys is that Daenerys only got to the Iron Throne at the very end, after she destroyed the city. Rhaenyra goes through this experience of having the throne, trying to hold it, and being, in a way, turned and changed by it. So I think they’re very different things, but I think that the parallels do call to the greater themes of the A Song of Ice and Fire universe, which is pride and power and how power corrupts.ā€

All episodes of House of the Dragon season 3 are now available to watch on HBO Max.
