Everybody Loves Raymond premiered on CBS in September 1996

Some of the storylines were based on the real-life marriage of star Ray Romano

Everybody Loves Raymond was all about family dynamics, but what about the actors' real-life loves?

The beloved CBS sitcom ran for nine seasons, from September 1996 to May 2005. The show followed sportswriter Ray Barone (Ray Romano) as he navigated life and love with his wife Debra (Patricia Heaton). The laughs often came hardest when the husband-and-wife team was forced to deal with Ray's parents, who lived right across the street in their Long Island, N.Y., suburb.

Everybody Loves Raymond was a case of art imitating life, as storylines were often drawn from Ray's own long-term marriage to Anna Romano and his relationships.

"My wife, on occasion, when our TV show was on, and we'd have an argument, and she'd turn and say, 'I don't want to see this on the show,' " Ray told PEOPLE in 2023. "And I would say, 'We already did that episode.' "

After winning 15 Emmy Awards, including two for Outstanding Comedy Series and several for acting, Everybody Loves Raymond aired its final episode on May 16, 2005. The sitcom celebrated its 30th anniversary with an event in New York City in 2025 and lives on today with all 210 episodes available to stream on Peacock and Paramount+.

Here's everything to know about the real-life partners of the Everybody Loves Raymond cast.

Ray went from being an accountant living in his parents’ basement to pursuing his passion for comedy and finding himself on the Late Show with David Letterman, according to PBS. Following that Letterman appearance, CBS called Ray to discuss a new sitcom. The result was Everybody Loves Raymond, which debuted in 1996 and aired until 2005.

Ray met his wife Anna in 1983, when they were working together as bank tellers in Queens, N.Y. To avoid potential awkwardness at work, Ray didn’t ask Anna out until he left the job to pursue stand-up. They began dating in 1985 and married two years later in 1987.

"I always tell her she took a gamble because she went out with a guy who lived at home and rode a bike to work, and now she has her own movie theater," Ray said during an appearance with Anna on the Double Date with Marlo Thomas & Phil Donahue podcast in 2022.

Now parents of four, they welcomed their first child, daughter Alexandra, in August 1990. Two years later, they were expecting twins.

"Anna called me after a sonogram and said, 'Well, we're having twins.' I was like, 'Come on!' She said, 'Yes. Twin girls,' ” Ray told PEOPLE in 1996, confessing he had hoped for a boy the second time around. “I tried to sound happy, going, 'Oh. Good. Good.' Finally, she told me, 'They're boys, you jerk!' That's when I knew I loved her."

Their twin sons, Matthew and Gregory, were born in January 1993. They welcomed their youngest child, son Joseph, in 1998.

The No Good Deed star revealed to TIME in 2019 that Anna's disinterest in fame has been the secret to their success.

"The reason [our marriage] works is because she is a person who A) doesn't need attention and B) can understand how I feel about her, even though it's hard for me to outwardly express that," Ray said. "She's the hero here."

Heaton portrayed Ray Barone’s wife Debra, for which she received several nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, winning in 2000 and 2001.

The Middle actress and her husband, English actor-director David Hunt, have been married for three decades. Heaton met Hunt when he sublet his N.Y.C. apartment to her while he was performing in a play, Yahoo! reported. They actually worked at restaurants within close proximity to each other but didn’t meet prior to the sublet.

The couple married in 1990 and began their family. They are now parents to four sons: Samuel, John, Joseph and Daniel.

"Motherhood brings out all the superpowers- you discover reservoirs of strength you didn’t believe were possible! Loved every minute," Heaton captioned a throwback photo of her children on Instagram in May 2024.

Hunt was also part of the Everybody Loves Raymond family — he had a recurring role as Ray’s nemesis neighbor Bill Parker. More recently, he had guest spots on Blue Bloods and Homeland and appeared in the 2025 film Merv.

Peter Boyle played the patriarch of the Barone family, Frank Barone. He received several nominations for his role and won the 2003 SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series with the rest of the Raymond cast.

Boyle met his wife Loraine Alterman on the set of Young Frankenstein (1974). Boyle played the Monster in the now-legendary Mel Brooks film, while Alterman was a Rolling Stone journalist visiting the set for work.

It was widely reported that Boyle was still wearing his monster makeup when he asked Alterman out, but she told The New York Times in 2001 that Boyle had exaggerated the truth, revealing, ''He actually was out of makeup when we met, but let him have it his way."

Alterman worked widely as a music writer and was friends with Yoko Ono. Through her, Boyle became friends with John Lennon. In 1977, Boyle and Alterman married with Ono and Lennon by their sides.

“My wife and I had a very low-key wedding,” Boyle told Philadelphia magazine in 2005. “At the last minute, I asked John to stand in as my best man. And he said yes. The rest is history.” He noted Lennon didn’t sing, but added, “He is John Lennon. And everything he does is memorable.”

Boyle died at New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2006 after getting diagnosed with heart disease and multiple myeloma, a bone marrow cancer. He was 71.
