‘Jeopardy!’ Drama as Contestant Wins Despite Wrong Final Answer

Drama ensued during the final minutes of the Jeopardy! game on Thursday as one contestant won despite getting the wrong final answer. Did the returning champion win? Read on to find out.

Kristin Franke, from Washington, D.C., returned for her second game on October 1 with a total of $8,900. On Thursday, the pastor played against Rian Robertson, from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and Elizabeth Severs, from Wilmington, North Carolina. Warning: Spoilers for the Thursday, October 1, episode of Jeopardy! ahead!

Robertson, a software developer, had the lead of $1,600 when he found the Daily Double on clue four. He wagered all of his money in “Go to Your Room.”

The clue read, “The Germans got a good hard look at themselves, in every sense, while signing 1919’s Treaty of Versailles in this opulent room.” “What is the Hall of Mirrors?” he answered correctly, giving him $3,200. He maintained the lead through the first 15 clues.

By the end of the round, Robertson had $7,400. Severs, a novelist, was in second place with $4,000. Franke had $1,600.

In Double Jeopardy, Robertson also found the first DD on clue nine. He had $11,000 and wagered $5,000.

In “19th Century Novels,” the clue was: “In a Thomas Hardy novel, the future holder of this title office sells his wife–a real though rare thing in the 19th century.” “What is The Mayor of Casterbridge?” Robertson answered correctly. This gave him $1,600.

“Wow!” host Ken Jennings said.

The leader also found the final DD on clue 25. With $19,200 in his bank, he wagered $100. The clue in “By the numbers” was, “Jiang Qing & Wang Hongwen made up half of this notorious group.”

“What is the Gang of Four?” Robertson answered correctly. He moved up to $19,300.

At the end of the round, Robertson had $18,900. Franke moved to second place with $8,000. Sever had $6,800.

The Final Jeopardy category was “Historic Zoology.” The clue read, “Described when first encountered in 1835, this species ‘must have weighed at least 200 pounds… gave a deep hiss, & drew in its head.'”

Two of the game show contestants had the correct response. Severs answered, “What is the Galapagos Tortoise?” She was correct and wagered $4,000, giving her $10,800.

Franke also had the correct response. She wagered $5,601, giving her $13,601. Robertson responded with “What is the Anaconda?” He wagered $2,800, making his final total $16,100.

Despite not getting the answer correct, Robertson still won the game. He will return for game two on Friday.
