Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter's daughter, Amy, said her whole family laughed at the viral 2021 photo of her parents with Joe and Jill Biden
In the photo, taken with a wide-angle lens in a small room in the Carters' Georgia home, the elder couple appears tiny, and almost doll-like

Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, maintained their love for one another and their zest for life well into their 90s.
The late president and first lady were married for more than 77 years — the longest in presidential history — until Rosalynn's death in November 2023 at the age of 96. Jimmy died just over a year later, having lived to be 100.
In their final years, the Carters went viral for an unexpected reason, after receiving a visit in May 2021 from then-President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden.
The Carter Center shared a photo of the four, with the Carters seated in floral-print armchairs and the Bidens posed beside them. However, due to a wide-angle lens, a small room, and the photo being taken from above, the Carters appeared tiny, almost doll-like, in comparison to the Bidens.
"That photo still makes me laugh," Amy Carter told PEOPLE of the meme-able moment. "I think I can safely say everyone in the family enjoyed it."
The youngest of the Carters' four children, and the only girl, Amy recently shared some thoughts on the chairs and other sentimental items of her parents that are going up for auction in the new year.
She partnered with world-famous auction house Christie's to select items from their estate to include in the upcoming American Collector Sale, in celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary in 2026.
Some of them, like the now-famous armchairs, still bring a smile to Amy's face.

"My parents could certainly appreciate the humor in something like that," she shared. "I remember my mom giggling, telling me about a time when my dad’s alarm was set incorrectly and he got up, got fully ready for the day and sat down with a cup of coffee only to notice that it was 2 a.m. She probably thought it was a little funnier than he did."
"But yes, they could definitely laugh at themselves," Amy added.
Christie's associate specialist Julia Jones also spoke with PEOPLE about finding "whimsical" items like the chairs in addition to pieces with more sentimental or historic significance.
"[It lends itself] to this bigger picture of ... Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, they're just people. They can also be victim to a wide-angle lens and look like little dolls sometimes," she said. "It was something that came about just very naturally and with a laugh."

There are also more heartfelt items, like a handwritten birthday note from Jimmy to Rosalynn on White House stationery. Dated Aug. 18, 1978, it reads, "To Rosalynn, it's nice to be growing old together with you. P.s. Happy birthday!"Amy said the simple but loving note was "definitely typical" of her parents' relationship.

"My mom kept my dad’s love letters close to her throughout her life. They were in her office within reaching distance of her chair when she died. He never stopped leaving notes for her," she shared. "They spoke every day, no matter where they were in the world."
"My favorite is one where my dad, as a holiday gift, solemnly vowed never to rush her when they were running late again. He inscribed it on a piece of wood so she would have it to pull out if he broke his promise."
The former first daughter said it makes her happy, not sad, to give away some of her parents' belongings through the auction, which is set to take place from Jan. 13 to Jan. 27, 2026.
"I like the idea of sharing my parents’ legacy and memory," she said. "I was incredibly lucky to have had such a long time with both of them, and there are so many personal things in my house and in my brothers’ houses that remind us of them every day."

Jones told PEOPLE that the Carters' collection, the first iteration of Christie's American Collector series, was put together with the goal of being a "diplomatic sale," with online bidding and items starting at just $100.
"How much more Americana can you get than Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter?" she noted. "It's amazing to be honored with this collection and offer it at market."
