John Stamos is reflecting on the dissolution of his first marriage

The Full House alum said on The Really Good Podcast on Wednesday, June 10 that he "didn't want to get divorced" from Rebecca Romijn

He also detailed what it was like to run into her husband Jerry O'Connell, who he called "very sweet"

John Stamos is sharing why his divorce from Rebecca Romijn "broke my heart" — and what it was like to run into her husband, Jerry O'Connell, years later.

On the Wednesday, June 10 episode of Bobbi Althoff's The Really Good Podcast, the Full House alum, 62, explained that he "didn't want to get divorced" when he and the actress, 53, announced their separation in 2004.

"She wanted to," Stamos said. "It took me a long time to get over it. But I have to say that she has a nice life, she married another guy, she has kids. They're doing great. I met him recently, which was very interesting."

Romijn and Stamos wed in 1998 and their divorce was finalized in 2005. Stamos has since married his wife Caitlin McHugh in 2018, welcoming son Billy that same year. As for Romijn, she and O'Connell, 52, wed in 2007 and share 17-year-old twin daughters Charlie and Dolly.

In November, O'Connell shared a snap to Instagram of himself hanging out with Stamos and McHugh, 40. "Gorgeous fam and gorgeous people," O'Connell captioned the post.

"He was very sweet," Stamos told Althoff of his run-in with O'Connell. "We were at a party together and he came over and was super nice. He couldn't have been sweeter."

Stamos added, "He was very, very funny and very charming. I met him maybe once, 20, 30 years ago. But I haven't seen her since we got divorced."

Stamos has previously told PEOPLE in October 2023 that his first marriage "was shattering to me," calling it "really difficult" to write the chapters of his memoir, If You Would Have Told Me, centered around the pair's former marriage. He also explained that his healing process "was not healthy."

"That's when I really started to kind of drink a lot," he said. "But without that, I never would've known what a real love is, and I would've never straightened up to get someone like Caitlin in my life."

Romijn previously reacted to Stamos' memoir during a January 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, saying she was "very surprised" and "incredibly shocked" by her portrayal in the book. She added that she felt "sort of blindsided" by the headlines surrounding its release.

In April, Stamos and McHugh celebrated their son's eighth birthday, as they took Billy and several of his pals to Monster Jam at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

In October, the actor told E! News that his son uses his dad's popular acting roles to impress the girls in his class. "He went to a new school. He said, 'Dad, we had to write down all our things, and they said, 'What's your favorite TV show?' " Stamos said. "And he said, 'The girl next to me put Fuller House.' And [Billy] said, 'You know, that's my dad. My dad's on that show.' "

Stamos said that his son acted out the little girl's reaction, before continuing his story. "[Billy] said, 'And he plays Uncle Jesse,'" Stamos said, reenacting his son's friend reacting. "So yeah, he's using it with the girls, which is fine," he joked.
