Johnny Depp transforms into Ebenezer Scrooge in the new trailer for Ebenezer.

Paramount Pictures released the first trailer for the movie on Thursday, Oct. 1. Ebenezer, a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol from X, Pearl and MaXXXine director Ti West, will mark Depp’s first movie released by a major Hollywood studio since Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) when it arrives in theaters Nov. 13.

Since the conclusion of Depp’s highly publicized 2022 defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, he has starred in the French film Jeanne du Barry, which opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and directed Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.

“The name you know, the story you don’t,” reads an official synopsis for the movie, which puts a new spin on Dickens’ classic 1843 novella.

Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen costar. In the trailer, McKellen, 87, appears to Depp’s Scrooge as the ghost of Jacob Marley, warning him about the three spirits who will visit him over Christmas.

Depp himself made news this summer when he surprised fans by appearing as Scrooge at San Diego Comic-Con in July during a pop-up activation promoting the movie, days after its first trailer debuted.

Following the appearance, a source told PEOPLE that Ebenezer “felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for Depp and described the movie as “a very special project for him.”

“He’s back in a character role, which he loves. He really comes to life when he’s in those characters — they’re in his DNA,” the source said, adding that Depp feels like “he’s never really gone away,” despite his absence from Hollywood movies in recent years.

After Ebenezer, Depp already has another Hollywood starring role lined up in Day Drinker, which costars Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz and is set to hit theaters in March 2027.

Previous adaptations of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol include the 2022 animated movie Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, the 2009 Jim Carrey-led adaptation and the classic 1951 film starring Alastair Sim.

Ebenezer is in theaters Nov. 13.
