For Kate Hudson, there was only one opinion that truly mattered at the premiere of "Song Sung Blue" in New York City.
Hudson’s oldest son, Ryder Robinson − a New York University student whose dad is her ex-husband Black Crowes musician Chris Robinson − watched his mom on screen in the Neil Diamond-inspired drama (in theaters Dec. 25) for the first time at the gala event.
Ryder, 21, thought Hudson, 46, was, well, so good, so good.
“I could see his pride,” Hudson tells USA TODAY. “He looked at me and was like, ‘Mom!’ and then he just went, ‘Wow!’ ”
Ryder is far from alone in his strong reaction to Hudson’s Golden Globe-nominated performance as Claire Sardina, half of the 1990s Milwaukee tribute duo Lightning & Thunder.

Kate Hudson is nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Claire Sardina in “Song Sung Blue,” in theaters Christmas Day.
The role opposite Hugh Jackman (as Mike Sardina) requires Hudson to belt the Diamond songbook and carry the dramatic load in the based-on-a-true-story saga of struggling singers with big dreams − all in a Friday fish fry-fluent Milwaukee accent.
Hudson's famous parents, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, have been supportive from the start, attending a spring private screening in Los Angeles when the actress saw her performance for the first time.
"I texted the family group chat, and my parents were like, 'We're in,' " she says. "It was wonderful to watch it for the first time with them because it reminded me of movies I saw as a little girl that made me say, 'I want to do that!' Movies that made me want to be an actress."
“Song Sung Blue” returns Hudson to the serious awards conversation after 25 years, serving as a musical bookend to her Oscar-nominated, Golden Globe-winning breakout role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous.”
"Many of us fell in love with Kate Hudson as Penny Lane," says "Song Sung Blue" writer and director Craig Brewer. "Kate still has that smile and that light in her eyes, which is everything this movie is supposed to be about. We're all a little older, we've lived a life, but there's still more living to do."

After a rom-com run that included "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and "Fool's Gold," Hudson has been selective about roles to accommodate her family, which includes Ryder; son Bingham, 14, with Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, and daughter Rani Rose, 7, with fiancé Danny Fujikawa.
"I've spent a lot of time making sure I was present for my kids," says Hudson. "I've been a mom my entire adult life. Now that Rani is a little bit older, I have allowed myself to really start working again. And sometimes, whether destiny or chance, you're destined to do things. They fall into your lap exactly how they're supposed to."

Singer and songwriter Neil Diamond's music career spans five decades, marked by beloved hits and global acclaim. A look back at his years in music ahead of the Diamond-inspired movie "Song Sung Blue," starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. Here, Diamond is seen in London for his first British concert during a tour of Europe in 1971.
Jackman urged casting Hudson after seeing her sing on CBS Sunday Morning in April 2024, during which the actress performed songs from "Glorious," her dream project and first album.
"I watched and texted Craig like, '100% Kate is Claire,' " says Jackman. "The offer went out the next day. Within 24 hours, Kate was in."

Hudson hadn't even realized that Diamond grew up near her childhood Colorado home. "He was like 10 minutes from me, how could I not have met Neil Diamond?" says Hudson. "That was like 39 years of my life. It's so weird."
In her biggest movie musical role, Hudson shows the chops to joyously sing the Diamond catalog and powerfully visit Claire's solo specialty, Patsy Cline.

Telling Claire's story of struggle after losing part of her leg in a freak accident − a car struck her as she gardened in her front yard − makes Hudson the proudest about the performance.
"This movie offered me the opportunity to do something where I wouldn't be the first person on the list to do this, and that's to delve into a character like this," says Hudson. "When you do things that are successful, especially in romantic comedies, they want to keep you there. They don't want to see you outside of those things."

The gasp-inducing car scene is intense, and keeping Hudson from bringing young Rani. "That would be too hard for her," says Hudson. "She's too young to see Mommy going through that on the screen."
But the rest of the family has stood up, with older brother Oliver Hudson supporting his sister at the movie's American Film Institute premiere, while Goldie and Kurt hit the New York City premiere with Ryder. Hudson made up for lost Diamond time by flying to Colorado to visit the retired singer, 84, who praised the finished film.
Both the visit and Diamond's FaceTime call to Hudson and Jackman on the AFI red carpet were "pretty emotional," she says.
"He said he wished he could be there, but he couldn't. But he loved the movie," says Hudson. "He even said that he wished his mom and dad could have been there to see it, which I thought was really sweet."
