Kim Kardashian reveals she used to manage her psoriasis by wrapping herself in Saran Wrap at night

She now uses Broc Shot, a broccoli seed-based treatment that provides lasting relief without side effects

Kardashian says the treatment has improved her confidence and fits seamlessly into her busy routine as a mom of four

Kim Kardashian used to have only one way to manage her painful skin disorder psoriasis — by wrapping herself up like a mummy.

“In the daytime, I would have to put on an ointment, and then wrap it in Saran Wrap at nighttime. So I used to have Saran Wrap by the side of my bed,” the entrepreneur, 45, tells PEOPLE about her ongoing struggle with the skin disorder, which causes painful, itchy patches of skin that can resemble scales.

While the plastic wrap treatment was somewhat effective — it allowed medicated ointment to work on her skin by “really locking it in” — Kardashian says it made her “sleep like crunchy Tin-Man. If I got up, you would hear crunch, crunch, crunch. When I would walk, [it was] like a diaper.”

There is no cure for psoriasis — which also affects Kardashian’s mother, Kris Jenner. The condition tends to go through cycles, flaring for a few weeks or months, then subsiding for a while. Then the telltale patches return. According to the Mayo Clinic, it can be painful and interfere with sleep and other everyday tasks. While treatments can help manage symptoms, Kardashian tells PEOPLE that go-to steroids didn’t really help.

“As soon as you stop them, it’s coming right back,” she said.

Now, Kardashian is partnering with a treatment she’s found to work: Broc Shot. It’s derived from broccoli seed and is available in capsule form, as well as flavored powders that dissolve in water. She prefers the powders, which she says fit into her routine. “They’re so easy to travel with,” the busy mom — who shares North, 13; Saint, 10; Chicago, 8; and Psalm, 7 with ex-husband Kanye West — says.

Kardashian says a friend recommended Broc Shot after other treatments failed and her psoriasis had become “unbearable.”

“My confidence level, and how I felt about my skin, went up and down based on how bad it would get,” she says. “Broc Shot helped me get everything under control.”

Before she found a reliable treatment, Kardashian tells PEOPLE, “Sometimes I felt really strong, like, ‘I am going to live with this and it’s going to be fine.’ Then when the spots would get bigger and bigger and start going up to my face — then I started to get really insecure.”
