King Charles is leading his country in honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts around the world.

On Sunday, Nov. 8, the King, 77, stepped out with the royal family as they paid tribute to British armed forces members who’d died in wartime.

Joining him were Prince William and Kate Middleton, both 44, and Queen Camilla, 79, senior politicians and leaders from many different faiths in the U.K.

They gathered at the Cenotaph memorial in the shadow of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London, for the solemn service. Watching from the balcony of the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office were Princess Kate and Camilla.

The service began when Big Ben chimed at 11 a.m. local time, marking the start of the two minutes of silence. Charles — wearing the uniform of Marshal of the Royal Air Force — laid a wreath of open poppy petals mounted on an arrangement of black leaves and scarlet, purple and gold ribbons to reflect his horse racing colors.

King Charles and Queen Camilla, 79, just returned from their tour to the Caribbean. The monarch started out the trip solo with stops in The Bahamas and Guyana before Queen Camilla joined him in Antigua and Barbuda.

Before the weekend, Prince Harry, 42, continued his commitment to supporting the Scotty’s charity, which helps children and families bereaved due to armed forces men and women dying in service.

The service at the Cenotaph was followed by a parade by veterans, and it came a day after many in the family had attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Cenotaph was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth‘s grandfather, King George V, on Nov. 11, 1920, as a tribute to the fallen soldiers from World War I. That same day, he laid the Unknown Warrior to rest in Westminster Abbey.

A Century of Remembrance author Laura Clouting previously told PEOPLE that Remembrance is “very personal” for the royal family, as a way to show their gratitude for “the loss of life basically occurring in their name — certainly in the name of the sovereign as the head of state.”
