HUNTR/X is going up, up, up once again!

After so many piecemeal updates on a potential *KPop Demon Hunters 2*, a sequel is now officially in development as Netflix and Sony closed deals with the filmmakers. Multiple trade outlets, including *Variety*, *Deadline*, and *Bloomberg*, were among the first to report the news.

However, it may be some time before we see the likes of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey back together for their next adventure. Netflix, which released the first movie on streaming, and Sony Animation, which produced it, are projected to release the movie in 2029, according to reports.

Chalk it up to the fact that animated movies take a helluva long time to make. The first *KPop Demon Hunters* released earlier this year in August, and its runaway international success was a surprise even to the studios. The movie still ranks in the Netflix top 10 lists as recently as last week after becoming the platform's most-watched original film of all time.

The streamer has since pivoted to capitalizing on that hype with a post-release media tour that saw cast members and filmmakers hit up the Toronto International Film Festival, and the trio of singers behind the musical vocals for the HUNTR/X characters — Ejae, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna — appeared on *The Tonight Show* and *Saturday Night Live*.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, *KPop Demon Hunters* introduced Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) as members of HUNTR/X, an internationally recognized K-pop girl group that secretly moonlight as demon hunters.

Powered by a Billboard and streaming chart-topping original soundtrack, including songs like "Soda Pop," "How It's Done," and "Golden," the characters' music creates a protective barrier that prevents hellspawns from invading the human world.

To combat them, the demons form their own rival K-pop boy band, dubbed the Saja Boys, to steal their fans and gobble up their souls for their demon master. Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop) was the face of the Saja Boys who developed feelings for Rumi, who struggled with her half-demon nature.

Plot details on the sequel are unknown. However, the filmmakers previously told EW that they mapped out the larger mythology and backstory around these characters, some of which could be explored in the future.

"We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that's brand new to people," Kang said. "What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like? There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show."
