Longtime producing collaborators Stewart and Meyer, who married in April 2025 after filming wrapped, worked together as actress and director for the first time
Making a movie together with that dynamic, Stewart says, “was the f---ing easiest thing”
What is it like starring in a movie directed by your spouse? Kristen Stewart now has the answer.
The Wrong Girls (in theaters Friday, Aug. 14) stars Stewart and Alia Shawkat as co-dependent best friends based on writer-director Dylan Meyer and her best friend, producer Maggie McLean. Stewart, 36, and Meyer, 38, wed on April 20, 2025, after filming on the stoner comedy had wrapped.
“Dylan’s really good at it,” Stewart tells PEOPLE of her wife’s filmmaking skills. While the Oscar nominee’s 2025 directorial debut The Chronology of Water was one of many times she’s worked with Meyer as co-founders of the production company Nevermind Pictures, The Wrong Girls marked the first time Meyer sat in the director’s chair with Stewart onscreen.
“I think if you have a movie in you and it needs to come out and you communicate well and you know how to pick your people,” Stewart says, Meyer “really knows how to pick ‘em, I’ll tell you…!” She laughs, “Sorry, that was really dumb.”
In addition to her “impressive” script, the set of The Wrong Girls became a place where Meyer’s chosen family of filmmakers could “support her in every literal and emotional way possible,” Stewart says.
“It was the f---ing easiest thing,” adds the Twilight alum. “And yeah, she’s pretty prolific, man. She’s just got so many movies in her. I just can’t wait to see what happens.”

Shawkat, 37, says she felt the ease and love too. “My mom used to say this quote: ‘The fish stinks at the head.’ And I always would say that when it comes to movie sets, because it’s really true. If you’re the director, you’re the head that’s going to make us stink or whatever.”
Meyer, the Arrested Development star recalls, “was such a great leader, so calm and grounded and appreciative of everybody’s time and clear about what she wanted. It just permeated.”

Meyer tells PEOPLE that it was her now-wife who encouraged her to make a feature-length directorial debut with The Wrong Girls, which she had written years beforehand. “She was just really like, ‘I really want to play this part, and I really believe you’re the person to direct it,’” recalls the L.A. native.
On set, “there was no part of me that was having to coach [Stewart],” adds Meyer. “There’s something really a lot easier about communicating with someone you know very well as an actor because you have all the same points of reference… And then I think she’s a really good actor! So that also just made it easy to do.”

The Wrong Girls, costarring LaKeith Stanfield, Tony Hale, Zack Fox, Kate McKinnon and Geena Davis, plus Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani voicing the titular characters’ cats, is in theaters Friday.
