Margaret Cho tells Richard Taite on his We're Out of Time podcast that she's taken GLP-1 medications to help manage her binge eating disorder

The comic says they reduce her cravings and "wild inner hunger"

Cho says she took the medication to quiet the "food noise" and calls them a "lifesaver"

Margaret Cho says that GLP-1 medications have been a "lifesaver" in managing the "self-soothing" cravings from her binge eating disorder, explaining that they help quiet the "wild inner hunger."

"I have taken them. I think they're great. I think they're really amazing for curbing impulse eating," the Run Amok star, 57, tells host Richard Taite (founder and executive chairman of Carrara Treatment Wellness & Spa and 1 Method Centers) in PEOPLE's exclusive preview of the March 17 episode of his We’re Out of Time podcast.

Cho and Taite were discussing how GLP-1 medications have shown promise in helping treat addictions to drugs and alcohol, prompting Cho to share, "I have a binge eating disorder. So, for me, it's actually been a quite a lifesaver. I think that they are just perfect for any kind of impulse control, you know, that that we're sort of looking at … people really criticize it, but I love them. I'm really grateful for them."

Taite shared that he was "smoking cigars all day long" before a GLP-1, saying "I never didn't have a cigar in my mouth," but now, he's down to smoking two cigars a day and "I don't even finish them."

GLP-1 is short for glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, which work in the brain to impact satiety. Semaglutide is sold under brand names Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatide is sold under brand names Mounjaro and Zepbound.

While Cho didn't specify which GLP-1 she uses, she said she started the regimen to "just stop the food noise. And it was less about losing weight ... 'cause the way that I have a binge eating disorder, like, I'll eat to the point of my mouth is sore." She explained that she wasn't eating "out of hunger or a need to satiate," describing it as "a kind of like wild inner hunger that doesn't make any sense."

"You're self-soothing is what you're doing," Taite said.

"It's self-soothing," she confirmed, "and definitely a very destructive habit. And so, I think yeah, it's been incredibly helpful. I really love GLP-1s."
