Mason Taylor named as New York Jets breakout candidate in 2026

Mason Taylor arrived in the NFL carrying a famous last name and lofty expectations.

The former LSU Tigers standout spent three productive seasons with the Tigers before hearing his name called in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Of course, his football pedigree didn't hurt either. His father, Hall of Fame defensive end Jason Taylor, built a legendary career with the Miami Dolphins, a fact that still makes some Jets fans cringe.

Fortunately for New York, Taylor is creating his own legacy, and it seems there is confidence for more. Recently, CBS Sports identified one under-the-radar breakout candidate for every AFC team entering the 2026 season.

For the Jets, the choice was Taylor.

The reasoning is easy to understand. While much of the attention focused on Garrett Wilson and the Jets' quarterback situation last season, Taylor quietly emerged as one of the offense's most reliable targets.

As CBS Sports indicates, Taylor finished his rookie season with 44 receptions and 369 receiving yards. He ranked first on the team in catches and second in receiving yards despite operating in an offense that struggled for consistency.

That isn't too shabby for a rookie tight end. Taylor quickly earned the trust of his coaches and quarterbacks, a difficult task at one of the NFL's most demanding positions. More weapons added could actually help him, though some observers believe the Jets' offseason additions could limit Taylor's opportunities.

New York used a first-round pick on former Oregon Ducks tight end Kenyon Sadiq and also added more talent to the receiving corps. On the surface, that might appear to create more competition for targets. CBS Sports sees it differently. More weapons should create better matchups across the board.

Defenses won't be able to focus solely on Wilson or Taylor, and offensive coordinator Frank Reich now has additional flexibility when designing personnel packages. The possibility of featuring both Taylor and Sadiq in two-tight-end sets could create headaches for opposing defenses.

The Jets have every reason to be excited. Then, there's the arrival of Geno Smith. The veteran quarterback should provide more stability than the Jets received a year ago, which could lead to more sustained drives and additional scoring opportunities.

Taylor already proved he can contribute. Now comes the challenge of building on that foundation. If he continues developing and benefits from improved quarterback play, CBS Sports may not be the only outlet discussing him as one of the Jets' breakout stars by season's end.

Taylor entered the league with a recognizable surname, but he's quickly becoming known for something else.

If 2026 unfolds the way CBS Sports expects, he'll spend even less time being introduced as Jason Taylor's son and more time being recognized as one of the Jets' rising stars.
