Metallica donated over $26,000 to Cardiff Foodbank during their European tour to help replenish empty shelves

The donation, the largest from a celebrity to Cardiff Foodbank, could provide 9,000 meals for around 1,000 people

Cardiff Foodbank has seen a 27% drop in donations this year, making Metallica's contribution especially impactful

Metallica's latest donation will help a lot of people.

In the midst of a European tour, the rock band donated more than $26,000 to Cardiff Foodbank through its All Within My Hands Foundation after playing a concert at the Welch city's Principality Stadium on Sunday, June 28.

"We’re thrilled to share that Metallica, who played in Cardiff last night, are donating £20,000 to Cardiff Foodbank," wrote the organization on Instagram. "This timely donation will help replenish our warehouse and could support around 1,000 people - the equivalent of 9,000 meals."

Cardiff Foodbank CEO Rachel Biggs spoke to the BBC about how the donation came about. "We had an email saying 'This isn't a scam, please get in touch with the foundation,'" she said. "They said 'We are going to donate £20,000 to you.'"

"It's an incredible amount of money which will make such a difference and replenish our empty shelves," added Biggs, who said Metallica's donation is Cardiff Foodbank's largest to come from a celebrity.

Earlier this month, Cardiff Foodbank posted to Instagram about feeling "very worried" regarding the organization's ability to provide for those in need.

"We have never seen our warehouse so empty, and now, for the first time ever, we’re out of crucial items—such as long-life fruit juices that make up our three-day emergency food parcels," read the post.

Biggs told the BBC how Metallica's offering will help amid a decrease in donations. "The number of people needing us is the same as last year, but our food donations have dropped by 27% and we've seen that reflected in the empty shelves," she said.

The CEO continued, "When this donation arrives in our bank account we'll be able to put in a bulk order and replenish stock and knowing the rest of the year we'll have the support of the community."

Metallica launched the All Within My Hands Foundation in 2017, and the organization is "dedicated to creating sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services," according to its website.

The "Enter Sandman" band — comprised of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo — will wrap its current M72 World Tour on July 5. The group will then kick off its Life Burns Faster residency at Sphere in Las Vegas, which runs from October 2026 to March 2027 with a total of 24 shows.
