Rapper Rick Ross was arrested in Miami and faces charges of one felony count of battery by strangulation and one misdemeanor count of battery

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Rick Ross, né William Leonard Roberts, was booked and charged. After Roberts' lawyer described him as a "celebrity," the Miami judge responded, “So, what does that mean?” As the attorney pleaded for an "expedited" release, the judge continued, "Hello Mr. Roberts, I have no idea who you are, except as somebody here in the court who's going to be treated fairly just like everyone else here."

His arrest comes just days after his ex-girlfriend, Jazzma Kendrick, publicly alleged that he physically assaulted her. This follows Roberts being punched in the face in 2024 after playing Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" in Canada.

While the alleged victim hasn't been identified, Kendrick, 39, recently posted photos on her Instagram displaying a lip injury. She described the incident as Roberts "bust[ing] her lip," after which she "left."

"I don't know a lot of things, but I do know that a man that puts his hands on me, is a man that never loved me and never will," shared Kendrick to social media. Kendrick continued, writing, "It's always good until it isn't. If a man hits you one time, he will do it again. Don't give him the opportunity. Value your life and leave," reports the Irish Star.

According to the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention, a woman who has survived non-fatal strangulation by an intimate partner faces a 750% greater risk of being killed by that same individual. While Kendrick didn't specifically allege strangulation, Roberts' current charges include battery by strangulation.

In response to an Instagram direct message that read "I'm seeing what Rick is seeing your [sic] so gorgeous," Kendrick wrote that the rapper "saw a punching bag."

Roberts has not issued a response to Kendrick's claims.

Gael Strack, co-founder of the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention, has stated that a study "proved it–most victims of strangulation will not have visible external injuries" and that "lack of injuries and the lack of training caused the criminal justice system to minimize strangulation."

Rick Ross has faced previous legal issues, including an assault charge

This isn't Roberts' first run-in with the law.

Back in August 2008, YouTuber DJ Vlad filed a $4 million lawsuit against the rapper, alleging assault and battery.

According to DJ Vlad's legal team, Roberts "orchestrated a brutal attack" which was "carried out at his direction by his accomplices, in retribution for media coverage of Rick Ross' prior life as a correctional officer."

In June 2015, Roberts and his bodyguard faced kidnapping and assault charges after allegedly keeping a groundskeeper in a guesthouse and striking him with a gun. The groundskeeper had reportedly angered Roberts because he "had people over for his birthday the night before," according to TMZ.

The rapper ultimately entered a no contest plea to the felony count of aggravated assault, with his remaining charges dismissed. He was handed a jail sentence and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, but he later had the conviction wiped from his record.
