Noah Schnapp will make his stage debut in the London play Affluenza

The play, which runs from Sept. 26 to Nov. 21, explores privilege, accountability, and the justice system, inspired by true events and a controversial legal defense

Schnapp says he was drawn to the script and will play two distinct roles in the darkly comic production

Noah Schnapp is heading from Hawkins to the London stage.

The Stranger Things star, 21, will make his stage debut in the world premiere of Affluenza, a new play written and directed by Tony Award-winning producer Andy Sandberg. The production will run at Riverside Studios in London from Sept. 26 through Nov. 21, with an official press night set for Oct. 5.

“I am so excited to make my stage debut in London with Affluenza,” Schnapp said in a statement announcing the news on Thursday, Aug. 13. “I started talking with Andy Sandberg a few months ago about finding the right opportunity to work together, and it’s thrilling to now be bringing this play to life in London.”

Set amid the wealth of the Hamptons, Affluenza centers on the aftermath of a teenager’s drunken car ride that ends in tragedy. Inspired by true events surrounding a controversial legal defense, the darkly comic play examines privilege, moral accountability, family legacy and the American justice system.

Schnapp, best known for playing Will Byers on Netflix’s Stranger Things, said he had been selective about choosing his next project.

“I wanted to be very intentional about what I took on next, and as I spend more time with this excellent script, I feel so connected to the characters,” he said. “Without giving away too much, I get to play two very different roles, and it’s a story that’s really going to leave audiences talking and thinking.”

The role marks a new chapter for Schnapp following the conclusion of Stranger Things, which debuted in 2016 and recently wrapped its fifth and final season. Schnapp starred throughout the Netflix phenomenon alongside Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown and his fellow Hawkins castmates as Will, whose disappearance helped set the supernatural events of the series in motion.

Outside of Stranger Things, Schnapp’s screen credits include The Tutor, Waiting for Anya, Abe, Hubie Halloween and Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies. He also voiced Charlie Brown in 2015’s The Peanuts Movie. Schnapp recently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied cinema and media studies.

Sandberg praised Schnapp for choosing to make the leap from screen to stage with an original work.

“Noah is a brilliant young actor who has captivated audiences on screen, and now London audiences will have the opportunity to see him in his stage debut,” Sandberg said. “I’m honoured that Noah has connected with the script, and I think it speaks volumes that he has chosen an original play for his stage debut.”

Affluenza will kick off Riverside Studios’ Mainstage Season 26/27, a slate of five new plays largely set in contemporary America. Additional casting and members of the creative team will be announced at a later date.
