Country singer Orville Peck has opened up about one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that he attempted suicide in 2023 amid addiction, a breakup, and declining mental health.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the singer revealed that he was “in one of the worst places” in 2023. The year saw a breakup and rehab stay. Far from being bogged down, the singer channeled his pain into the new album, “Mule”.

Peck confessed that he had cancelled the Bronco Tour in June 2023 due to the suicide attempt. “I was a bad addict, a coping alcoholic,” he said. “And I had this spiral moment, where I went back to my hotel and tried to take my life. It was a big turning point for me, with a lot of realizations to come. It was something that needed to happen.” The 38-year-old also said that he had overdosed just two days earlier.

The singer reflected on his time at the rehab when he just wanted to “leave”. He thought it was a “waste of time”. The singer then decided, “So I was like, I’m going to write the funniest song about this experience, because at the time I was just like, ‘F— this. I want to leave.”

Peck was diligent about owning up, and did not believe in waxing eloquent about his recovery. He said, “What I was really trying to capture in terms of the concept, there was no way to gloss over or sugarcoat it.”

Things started to look up in 2024 during his Broadway run. Peck told People that he was “having the best time of my life.”

The South African-born singer is known for his deep baritone and the signature fringed mask. He rose to fame with his 2019 debut album “Pony”. Since then, he has been a prominent voice in blending traditional country music with queer storytelling.
