In this week's issue, Patricia Arquette tells PEOPLE about the freeing chapter of life she's in as, for the first time, she has no one to answer to but herself
"The whole world's different all of a sudden, and I can have all these adventures and spend time with people I really miss that I want to spend time with," she says

Patricia Arquette is thriving.
The 57-year-old actress, who plays murdered South Caroline matriarch Maggie Murdaugh in Hulu's Murdaugh: Death in the Family, has entered a new chapter of her life, and it's unlike what she's ever experienced.
"I'm at a really exciting moment in my life," she tells PEOPLE in this week's issue. "My kids are grown up, I'm single, I don't have to take anybody else's dreams into account as far as: where do I want to live? What do I want my house to look like? Can I go on this vacation with my girlfriend or not?"
"I get to ask myself for the first time in my life — because I was a mom at 20 — what do I want to do?" says Arquette, who is mom to son Enzo, 36, whom she shares with ex Paul Rossi, and daughter Harlow, 22, whom she shares with her ex-husband Thomas Jane.
Arquette and Jane, 56, were married for four years and divorced in 2010. Prior to that, the Severance star was married to Nicolas Cage from 1995 to 2001.

"It's an incredible thing when your kids are raised, and, if your relationship didn't work out and you decided I can't live with all of that, to be able to have a moment where you go, 'Who am I? What do I want?' " she continues.
"I'm there, and it's exciting."

The way she feels about life right now resonates with something she was once told. "It's funny because somebody had told me that the Chinese call menopause the second spring, and it kind of is a second spring," Arquette says."The whole world's different all of a sudden, and I can have all these adventures and spend time with people I really miss that I want to spend time with."

Patricia Arquette as Maggie in 'Murdaugh: Death in the Family'
It's that line of thinking that drew Arquette to play Maggie in Murdaugh: Death in the Family. The mother of two was found dead in 2021, alongside her son Paul, at their home, and her husband Alex Murdaugh was later convicted of killing them both and sentenced to two life sentences in prison in 2023.
"Maggie was just about to be there," the actress says, referring to the stage she's reached in her own life, with her kids grown up and her life all her own again.
"What was really interesting to me about this story was this charming, charismatic personality who is the head of the family, but also a pathological liar, betrayer, manipulator," she adds of the family's story and why she took the role. "And for this woman, for her to start realizing, 'I have no clue who I'm married to.' Where does it end? All of these layers of layers of deception and gaslighting and manipulation — who are you?"
