"The things that had always anchored me — my family and my work — were gone. I started thinking, 'What am I supposed to do today?'" she recalled.

What began as an occasional glass of wine slowly became a much bigger part of her daily routine.

"A glass of wine while cooking became wine with dinner, wine while cleaning up and wine while watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!" the sitcom star said.

"One night I realized I had almost finished an entire bottle by myself," she added.

Patricia Heaton admitted her casual wine habit had gradually become part of her daily routine.MEGA

The actress, who shares four sons, Samuel,John, Joseph and Daniel, with her husband, David Hunt, said she was becoming increasingly aware that her relationship with alcohol was changing.

"As an actor, you study behavior. I noticed my own behavior changing. I was thinking about alcohol differently," she explained.

According to Heaton, the answer came almost immediately.

The next day, she was spending time with her sons and their friends when she found herself unable to pronounce the word "tradition." She tried three times, only for her youngest son, Daniel, to point out what was happening.

The actress recalled praying for help after feeling unable to quit drinking on her own.MEGA

"My youngest son said, ‘That’s great, Mom. You can’t even speak,'" Heaton recalled.

The comment left her "completely mortified," but it also became the wake-up call she had been asking for.

"The next morning I said, ‘Okay, God. Message received,’" she said.

"That was eight years ago," the Emmy winner added.

The Emmy winner later turned her sobriety journey into a non-alcoholic wine business with husband David Hunt.MEGA

Heaton has since spoken openly about her sobriety. In 2021, she shared that she was celebrating three years of "freedom from alcohol," encouraging anyone struggling with drinking to reach out for support.

Her journey has also inspired a business venture. Together with Hunt, she created Solubrae, a line of non-alcoholic California grape wines.
