A lawyer for Perez Hilton’s mother, Teresita Lavandeira, spoke out after Lavandeira filed for temporary custody of the blogger’s three children

A lawyer for Perez Hilton’s mother, Teresita Lavandeira, is speaking out after Lavandeira filed for temporary custody of the blogger’s three children. Lavandeira filed the petition in a Miami family court on Aug. 7, three days after Hilton appeared to self-harm on a TikTok livestream, per court docs previously obtained by PEOPLE.

In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE on Aug. 12, Natalie F. Guerra-Valdes, a Florida attorney representing Lavandeira, says, “My main concern and objective, as well as the family’s, is to protect the children and make sure they are safe.”

“We want them to have some sense of normalcy as they begin their journey of healing after the tragic events that occurred last week,” the attorney adds.

On Aug. 4, the 48-year-old blogger was hospitalized following a livestream from his Miami home while he was covered in blood and appeared to self-harm. Local authorities were called to the scene after receiving reports of a suicide attempt, and he was hospitalized by local authorities under Florida’s Baker Act, a state law that allows authorities to hold someone involuntarily for a period of time if they pose a threat of harm to themselves or others.

Hilton’s family previously said in an update on Aug. 8 that the internet personality had experienced “significant blood loss” and “additional injuries” during the incident and would require surgery, anticipating that his treatment and recovery would be “a long process.”

They added at the time, however, that his condition was “serious but stable.”

Hilton is a father to children Mario, 13, Mia, 11, and Mayte, 8, all of whom live with his mother in Miami, where they recently moved to be closer to family. His family previously said in a statement that Hilton’s children, niece and sister were home minutes before his livestream, and when it became apparent that he was “experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself,” they “immediately fled” the property.

Representatives for Hilton shared in a statement on Aug. 5 that they did not “have any additional confirmed information to share regarding Perez Hilton’s condition” and have not commented further in the days since.

Hilton’s TikTok account was banned following his Aug. 4 livestream following his Aug. 4, a U.S. spokesperson for TikTok confirmed to PEOPLE.
