Today, Versace and the Prada Group announced Pieter Mulier’s appointment as chief creative director. The news arrives just six days after Alaïa revealed that Mulier would be stepping down after five years. While there’s no official word yet on when Mulier will present his first collection for Versace, his final outing for Alaïa will be shown during the upcoming fall 2026 collections in Paris.
Mulier’s appointment follows a period of creative uncertainty at Versace. After a single, critically lauded collection, Dario Vitale departed the brand in early December, shortly after the Prada Group announced its acquisition of the Italian house. At the time, Vitale’s exit felt abrupt, leaving the question of his successor wide open. Given Mulier’s relatively short—but widely admired—tenure at Alaïa, his move to Versace wasn’t necessarily expected, at least not until the announcement of his departure from Alaïa nearly a week ago.

Mulier possesses a rare and powerful understanding of the intersection between high fashion and everyday desire. In his short but esteemed five years at Alaïa, he manipulated fabric to fall over the body in transcendent ways, be that a micro-pleated skirt with padding at the hip or a clinging silk knit dress with a cocooned sleeve, giving new meaning to the house's "body con" legacy. His magic lies in the belief that while a runway show should inspire dreams, what ultimately reaches the shop floor must be a livable extension of that fantasy. With that sensibility, he’s poised to bring a renewed sense of magic to Versace.

Vitale’s swan song at Versace was an extraordinary ad campaign released earlier this week, spotlighting his moving, thoughtful, provocative, and irresistibly desirable spring 2026 collection. With just one runway show last September in Milan, Vitale managed to reinvigorate the house with a sense of verve and progressiveness reminiscent of its founder, Gianni Versace—though his vision was entirely his own. Jewel-toned jeans were paired with bedazzled bras, sweaters tied casually at the waist; sensual tank tops met sharp leather jackets, and trousers sat slyly unbuttoned and unzipped to reveal flashes of underwear beneath.

There’s still no word on Vitale’s next move, but he’s already amassed a devoted following eagerly awaiting whatever comes next. Meanwhile, Mulier’s own loyal admirers will soon have reason to celebrate. Though his exquisite vision for Alaïa will undoubtedly be missed, his arrival at Versace promises a thrilling new chapter for the house.
