Prince William and Kate Middleton’s “Secret” to Successful Marriage Boils Down to One Word

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been married for over 15 years, after tying the knot on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have gone on to welcome three children and build a solid marriage built to last the duration.

Royal biographer Russell Myers said the “secret” to their union boils down to one word: support.

Prince William and Kate Middleton are over 15 years into marriage, and this fall will mark 25 years since their love story began as first-year college students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

There is no exact formula for a thriving relationship, but a royal biographer identified, in his view, the key to the pair’s success. “The secret to the Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage is support for one another throughout their roles as working royals and as parents to their three young children,” said Russell Myers, who wrote the book William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story, which came out in February.

“Everything they do is in tandem, and this includes Catherine being the catalyst for William launching the Earthshot Prize when he doubted it could become the global success it has,” Myers told The Mirror.

William launched the Earthshot Prize in 2020 as a 10-year mission to help save the planet from environmental threats. In six years, it has identified more than 5,600 emerging environmental innovations from 156 countries (per People) and annually, a winner across five different categories receives $1.4 million to advance their efforts.

The winners are announced at the yearly Earthshot Prize Awards, which have taken place in a different continent each year: the U.K. in 2021; the U.S. in 2022; Singapore in 2023; South Africa in 2024; and Brazil in 2025. The awards will head to Mumbai, India this November, and Kate is expected to join William for the trip. Notably, this is the first awards ceremony she will have attended since 2022, and her first joint international trip with her husband since her cancer diagnosis two years ago. (In January 2025, she announced that she is in remission.)

The Prince and Princess of Wales have visited India together before—back in 2016, when they were still the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, they underwent an extensive tour of the country. This time, in addition to visiting Mumbai, The Mirror reported that the couple will also likely travel to Delhi at the request of the U.K. government.

“They are completely aligned in their love of nature and their belief in the climate crisis facing the world,” former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror. “It’s not just that she feels she should support her husband. The natural world, the fresh air we hope to keep on breathing, and the delicate balance of preserving our planet are just as key to Catherine as they are to William. And that’s one of the many reasons why they make such a great team.”

“They are partners—and far more equal partners—than many future kings and queens before them,” she continued.

Just as Kate supports William’s environmental efforts, William supports Kate’s life’s work of early childhood development, which Myers said has “made huge strides” over the past few years.

The trip to India in a few months’ time “is a chance of renewal for both of them, and when they are together on the international stage, there is no doubt they have a far bigger impact,” Myers said. “The royal family—and indeed the country—has been missing that, and the way they are prepared to take on this trip at a time of immense diplomatic sensitivity bodes extremely well for the future.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales are also aligned in raising their three children Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8. “The children are the future royal family, so William and Kate accept that they need to be seen in public sometimes,” royal biographer Robert Jobson told Hello!.

“The reality is that they’re still very protective of them, but in certain situations it works,” he said, adding, “It’s also good for the kids without overwhelming them.”

In raising his three children, William is taking a page from his mother, Princess Diana, royal biographer Simon Vigar told Hello!.

“Diana was the first person to make sure her boys had some sort of normal lifestyle, and that is continuing with the Wales children,” he said. “George, Charlotte, and Louis have a more normal childhood than William and [Prince] Harry did.”
