A new memoir has reopened one of the darkest chapters of Prince William‘s childhood. Its author is his own uncle, Charles Spencer. The royal feud between William and Spencer now has a deeply personal edge and raises hard questions about family loyalty.

Charles Spencer’s Swan Song: Diana, My Sister reveals that he strongly opposed then-Prince Charles’ decision for William and Harry to walk behind Diana’s casket in 1997. Spencer, 62, said he confronted Charles in anger, but William, 15, and Harry, 12, ultimately walked behind their mother’s casket with their father.

Royal commentator Kinsey Schofield told Page Six that the royal feud between William and Spencer carries extra weight. “With Prince William, there is an additional sense of betrayal because this is coming from his own uncle,” she said. She noted that Spencer stood at Diana’s funeral and “publicly promised that her blood family would protect William and Harry.”

Nearly three decades later, Schofield said, William is watching that same uncle reopen “some of the most traumatic events of his childhood.” She added that the book also contains “very damaging allegations about his father.”

Schofield said William, 44, has spent much of his adult life trying to “draw a boundary” around his mother’s memory. “For that boundary to now be crossed by Diana’s own brother makes this particularly painful for William,” she said.

She also pointed to William’s future role. The institution hurt by “another round of Charles and Diana warfare,” she said, is the one William will eventually inherit when he becomes king.

Schofield said she is hearing of “considerable frustration and anger” on both sides, for “different reasons.” For the king, she said, there is anger over what is seen as “character assassination” based on an alleged private conversation from almost 30 years ago.

The source also reported that Harry is allegedly staying on Spencer’s good side. Royal journalist Tom Sykes told the outlet he believes Harry has been “wooing” Spencer. This comes amid rumors that he and Meghan Markle are producing a documentary about Diana.

Meanwhile, the rift between the two brothers continues, though the ice is slowly thawing between Harry and his father.
