Scottie Scheffler was disgusted after a Presidents Cup spectator heckled Nico Echavarria during his backswing, and the world No. 1 followed it by extending a generous gesture to his opponent.

The Colombian was teeing off on the 14th hole at Medinah Country Club when a spectator yelled, "Let's go, Scottie." Echavarria was starting his downswing when the heckle was made, and it clearly disturbed the 32-year-old.

Echavarria dropped his club after making contact as his ball sliced wide right, and he stared in the direction of the spectator. His opponent, Scheffler, was furious, too. Not for the first time this week, the world No. 1 showed his class. It comes as Trump sparks Presidents Cup chaos as Secret Service poised to intervene.

"There's no place for that," Scheffler fumed as he stomped across the tee box toward the gallery. He then asked: "Who yelled?" Seemingly, he wanted the culprit to be turfed out by security staff.

Scheffler is a ruthless competitor, and the stakes are high as he and his Team USA allies try to mount a comeback against the Internationals. But the four-time major champion wanted no part in the fan's cynical shenanigans.

Scheffler showed further grace and sportsmanship when he conceded a 32-foot putt that Echavarria had to tie the hole.

Echavarria was unlikely to make the putt, and Scheffler would have gone four up with four to play had he missed, but the fan's behavior had left a sour taste in his mouth.

The concession preserved the Team USA star's three-hole lead as he closed in on a crucial victory with the tournament going down to the wire, but it showed his character that he did not want to profit from the poor treatment of his opponent.

His conduct impressed NBC on-course reporter John Wood, who said on the broadcast: "Pure touch of class from Scottie Scheffler."

Brandt Snedeker's Team USA started the final session trailing 10.5-7.5 as Geoff Ogilvy's Internationals chased a first win in almost 30 years.

The Americans have responded with a spirited fightback to leave the match on a knife-edge. Cameron Young and Justin Thomas have delivered victories for the Americans in the early matches.

But Tom Kim continued his outstanding week for the Internationals by taking down the in-form Wyndham Clark to take his team one step closer to dreamland.
