Sony boss weighs in on Spider-Man succession plan after Tom Holland says it’s ‘laid out’

Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman is addressing the current Spider-Man succession plan after Brand New Day crushed at the box office.

The film broke the domestic box office record for biggest opening weekend, a title previously held by Avengers: Endgame.

The chairperson said that “we don’t know” whether or not Holland will stay as Spider-Man, but that “we would love it if he did.”

Sony Pictures boss Tom Rothman is shedding light on the current status of the Spider-Man succession plan after Tom Holland’s latest outing as the beloved webslinger just made box office history.

Brand New Day — led by Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon — took home a whooping $360 million at the domestic box office and $927 million globally on its opening weekend. In doing so, it has officially broken Avengers: Endgame’s record for the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time.

So, naturally, fans are curious about what’s next for Holland’s version of Peter Parker, especially after the actor recently teased that there’s already a plan in place for him to pass the Spider-Man mantle to another actor.

When asked by Variety if Sony really plans to let Holland go after such massive box office success, Rothman told the outlet, “I love these questions. It’s like when a coach wins the Super Bowl and he goes to the press conference and they say to him, ‘Are you going to win it next year?’”

Spoiler alert: it’s a little more complicated than that. “The honest truth is we don’t know at this point,” he continued. “This has been the focus of our studio for almost two years. I can tell you this: I certainly, certainly hope. I heard Tom say at some point that he wanted to continue, and we would love it if he did.”

While the outlet acknowledged that “nothing’s in place” right now, reporter Rebecca Rubin asked Rothman if there was still “a world in which there will be another Spider-Man sequel with Tom Holland” in the future, to which he simply replied, “Yes.”

Rothman’s remarks come less than one week after Holland confirmed there’s been a plan in place for years on how to pass the baton from one Spidey to the next. “It’s laid out,” the actor said on a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused. “It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”

He continued, “I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure.”

That doesn’t mean Holland is interested in hanging up his suit anytime soon. The 30-year-old actor previously told The Hollywood Reporterthat he’s down to play Spider-Man for “as long as they have me,” adding, “So if this movie does good, I guess we’ll see!”

Still, Holland recently told the AP about his “desire to bring Miles Morales to the screen” and to “shepherd the lucky young kid who gets that job” in the same way that Robert Downey Jr. did for him on Spider-Man: Homecoming. Miles is another Spider-Man that comic book fans have longed to see make his live-action debut. The character currently leads the Spider-Verse films, the first of which won the Oscar for Best Animated Film in 2019.

While visiting Happy Sad Confused, Holland also expressed his support for more Spider-Man projects to be released alongside his MCU films, including new projects for previous Spider-Man iterations Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.

“Of course I do! Are you kidding?” he said. “I think what also’s been so fun over these last few years is that there’s so many different Spider-Man mediums.”
