- - Spoilers! 'Frankenstein' cast spills on Netflix movie's 'beautiful' ending

Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of Netflix’s “Frankenstein” (streaming now), so beware if you haven’t seen it yet.

The latest version of Frankenstein’s monster, like his predecessors, gets put through the physical and emotional wringer. He also earns maybe not exactly a happy ending but a bittersweet one.

In Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s gothic classic, obsessive scientist Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) creates life in the form of his patchwork Creature (Jacob Elordi). Jealous and plagued by his own personal issues, Victor decides to rid himself of his masterwork, a choice that takes its toll on both Victor and the Creature and leads to an epic chase that leaves tragedy and death in its wake.

What happens in the ending of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’?

Jacob Elordi plays the Creature in Netflix's "Frankenstein," an adaptation of the Mary Shelley classic by Guillermo del Toro.

Ultimately, Victor and the Creature wind up in the Arctic Circle, where a Danish ship is stuck in the ice on an expedition. The captain (Lars Mikkelsen) saves a gravely injured and ailing Victor, who’s tracked the Creature to the North Pole, but the creation is not exactly pleased with his creator, either. They do have a heartfelt conversation, though, and the Creature forgives him before Victor dies.

Afterward, the not-so-monstrous figure uses his great strength to push the ship out of its icy trap, freeing the sailors so they can return home. And while he’ll always be an outsider in the world, the Creature looks up at the sunrise and appears content and at peace for the first time.

It’s a more hopeful ending than Shelley’s novel, where the creature plans to kill himself.

“He ends alone, broken-hearted, but lives on. It's very personal to me,” del Toro says about his movie's coda. “Yes, everything is imperfect and we remain. You can only talk about what you understand, and I understand that ending. I don't understand the other ending. I'm not Anglo-Saxon. I'm not Protestant. I'm a Catholic boy from Guadalajara, and I make a movie that is coming through that.”

Elordi loves the movie’s final frame: “Regardless of all the hell and the anguish and the suffering, (the Creature) looks to the sun, and he decides that he's going to live. I carry that with me after making the film and I'm incredibly grateful to Guillermo for sort of singing that song of hope."
