Spoiler alert! We're discussing important plot points and the ending of “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” so beware if you haven’t seen it yet.
More than 20 years before he was winning an Oscar for “Oppenheimer,” Cillian Murphy was fending off zombie-like infected folks in the U.K. in the 2003 horror classic “28 Days Later.”
Fast forward three decades, and much to the delight of fans of scary movies, Murphy is back in the post-apocalyptic world originally created by director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, thanks to an appearance in “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” And Murphy’s traumatized bicycle courier Jim still has a big heart.

Cillian Murphy reprises his role from 2003's "28 Days Later" in the new "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."
A lot happens before he shows up, though. The sequel to last year’s “28 Years Later” catches up with Spike (Alfie Williams), the young hero of the previous film who’s fallen in with the murderous cult of satanic Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) and desperately wants out. Meanwhile, good doctor Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) is experimenting on the massive Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry) to see if he can cure the rage virus running through the big man, and Kelson's and Spike’s story lines crash together in fiery fashion.

What happens in the new ’28 Years Later’ ending?
Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes, left) tries to connect with Sir Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) in "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple."
The Jimmies wind up finding Kelson’s Bone Temple, and Sir Jimmy, who’s starting to lose control of his gang, convinces Kelson to pretend he’s Sir Jimmy's dad – believed to be Satan – so the Jimmies will stay in line. After Kelson’s awesome, fire-dancing performance of Iron Maiden’s “The Number of the Beast,” he recognizes Spike underneath a mask and turns on Sir Jimmy to protect the boy. Sir Jimmy sticks a knife in Kelson, which turns out to be a mortal wound, but Spike and Kelly (Erin Kellyman) – aka Jimmy Ink – attack Sir Jimmy. They escape and leave Sir Jimmy crucified upside down on a cross.
Cut to a bucolic house in the remote English countryside. Murphy's old character Jim is seen going over homework with a young girl – presumably his daughter with Selena (Naomie Harris from “28 Days”) – when she notices a couple of people running from a group of infected. Jim grabs his gun and they get closer. “Are we going to help them?” the girl asks. “Of course we are,” Jim answers. (In "28 Days Later," he assisted Selena and another young girl in escaping a group of sadistic soldiers.)
“It's really gratifying to reintroduce a character that means so much to me as a film fan, and as a fan of that original film,” DaCosta says. Murphy traveled to the sprawling Lake District in England to film for two days, and “it was great, man. If you told me when I was 12, rewatching '28 Days Later' over and over again, that I would be directing the film that Cillian returns in, I would probably scream and cry and throw up.”
What is an Alpha zombie?
Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry) is the Alpha of the infected who undergoes a startling evolution in "The Bone Temple."
Samson is considered the Alpha of the infected, a leader with a relentless drive when he’s hunting prey and known for ripping the head and spine out of a body. “The risk that Kelson takes even basically befriending Samson is huge,” DaCosta says.
The doctor uses tranquilizer darts on Samson to put him in an altered state so he can heal Samson’s scars and wounds and talk to him. That communication and the experimental drugs that Kelson uses on Samson begin to work, as the Alpha remembers when he was a boy on a train with his parents when the rage virus broke out.

A huge moment comes when Samson speaks for the first time – “Moon,” a reference to the astronomy book he was reading on the train – and he starts to revert back to being more alive and human again, though now he becomes a target of the infected.
“One of the most beautiful things about this movie is how hopeful it is. And that's why it's so brutal because it has to be as brutal as it is hopeful,” DaCosta says. The Samson story line is important because “you have a character like Kelson who really believes in a person's capacity to change. And I think that will continue to be important in the series.”
Will there be another ’28 Years Later’ movie?
Spike (Alfie Williams, right, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is the central character for the "28 Years Later" trilogy.
A third film is in the works, with Murphy – an executive producer on the two “28 Years Later” movies – returning to star, Garland again writing the script, and Boyle likely in the director’s chair again.
“This trilogy is Spike’s, but in each movie, we got to have these long moments about the characters, and for the third one, it's Jim,” DaCosta says. “I don't know exactly what's going to happen in that movie, so I'll leave that to everyone to find out later.”
Murphy’s return, for DaCosta, helps give balance to a rather unnerving movie franchise. “Some terrible things happen to everyone in that world,” she says. “Some people are Kelsons and Jims and some people are Jimmies, but we love the Jims.”
