Josh Griffith, head writer of The Young and the Restless, is leaving the soap opera.
On Friday, June 26, TV Insider confirmed that the Emmy-winning writer has decided to exit the long-running daytime CBS show. The cast and crew of the soap opera learned of his departure earlier that day, according to the outlet.
The exact date of the writer's departure is not yet clear, and he will continue in the role for now, according to TV Insider and Soap Opera Digest.
It is also unclear who will be his successor in continuing the story of the residents of Genoa City.

A spokesperson for The Young and the Restless did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Saturday, June 27.
Griffith was previously a co-executive producer of The Young and the Restless in addition to head writer, but recently stepped down.
A spokesperson for the soap opera confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that the Emmy winner was stepping down from his producing role to focus on his writing duties in early May. Sally McDonald took over his producing duties, according to TV Insider.

The head writer's departure comes on the heels of two decades of history with The Young and the Restless, during which he had several roles.
He first joined the legendary soap as a writer back in 2006 and added co-executive producer to his duties before exiting the CBS program in 2008, according to TV Insider. He returned for a stint from 2012 to 2013, after which he moved to a different soap, Days of Our Lives, in 2015.

Griffith didn't stay away from Genoa City for long, per TV Insider, returning to The Young and the Restless in 2018 as supervising producer. The following year, he was promoted to head writer, and in 2023, he took on an additional role as executive producer.
He has won seven Daytime Emmys, four of which were awarded for his work on The Young and the Restless. He earned the others for his work as a writer on Santa Barbara and One Life to Live.
Late last year, Griffith teased what was to come for the residents of Genoa City — including some “surprises” in 2026 while speaking with TV Insider.
“You've got to just keep that momentum going. It's going to be a very exciting, suspenseful, and romantic winter and spring,” he said at the time. “It's going to be jam-packed with intrigue, mystery, suspense, and love.”
“We have some fun surprises up our sleeve for 2026,” added the Emmy winner.
