Tony Romo learned where he stands with CBS after the network revealed its NFL announcer assignments for the remainder of September.
Romo remains on paid leave with CBS following his operating while intoxicated (OWI) arrest in July, and the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has now learned he won’t be returning to the broadcast booth before the end of September. It comes after Romo pled no contest to his OWI charge at the start of this month, which signifies he accepts the court’s punishment without admitting guilt.
On Monday, CBS released its announcer assignments through Week 3 of the 2026 NFL season, and Romo’s name was not listed. The backlash comes after Terry Bradshaw snapped at a FOX NFL Sunday co-star after being corrected.

JJ Watt will remain CBS’ top analyst and partner with play-by-play commentator Jim Nantz through to the end of September, at least.
Watt and Nantz are now confirmed to be calling the Week 2 matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots on Sept. 20 before heading to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for a Week 3 game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 27.
It remains unclear when or if Romo will ever return to the booth with CBS. He had been the network’s lead NFL analyst since 2017, which marked the first season after he retired from his 13-year NFL career, the entirety of which he played with the Cowboys.

Romo still has four years remaining on his 10-year, $180 million contract he signed with CBS in 2020.

At the time of signing, it was the most lucrative deal ever given to a sports television analyst, although it has since been surpassed by Tom Brady’s 10-year, $375 million deal with FOX.
Romo released a lengthy statement on social media on Sept. 1, writing that he “faced a recent personal failure” that he “owns completely.”
"Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain. That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol,” Romo wrote.

He finished by writing: "As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period. God bless.”
It is unclear what has been said or promised in the back channels of communication between Romo and CBS, and all that is known publicly is that Romo's suspension is indefinite and could last any period of time.
CBS Sports President David Benson stated in July that he does not have a timeline for a decision regarding Romo’s future with the network.
Elsewhere, a FOX sideline reporter's concerning performance worried NFL viewers.
