President Donald Trump shared what he remembered about John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s relationship in a new Fox News interview

The politician said he spent time with the late businessman and fashion publicist, and would see the couple at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida

John and Carolyn were 38 and 33 years old, respectively, when they died in a plane crash in 1999

President Donald Trump is sharing his memory of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s relationship.

The 79-year-old politician recalled his run-ins with the late businessman in a new interview on Fox News’ The Five on Thursday, March 26. “I actually knew him and liked him, and he liked me, believe it or not,” Trump said, adding that the George magazine founder "actually put me on the cover of his magazine." (Trump appeared on a March 2000 cover of George, the year after John died.)

John, 38, and Carolyn, 33, were killed in an aviation accident off the coast of Martha's Vineyard on July 16, 1999, along with Carolyn's 34-year-old sister, Lauren Bessette.

Looking back, Trump said that John and Carolyn spent time at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Fla.

“They would go down to Mar-a-Lago together, and they had a very interesting relationship,” the president claimed. “They would bicker together, in other words have little fights, and then they would make up and start kissing wildly.”

“It was one of those relationships, and you never know how those relationships are going to turnout,” Trump continued, calling their deaths “tragic.”

There has been renewed interest in the late couple’s life following the release of Ryan Murphy’s drama series, Love Story, which debuted on FX on Feb. 12 and aired its season finale on Thursday night. It is the latest installment in Murphy's American Story anthology franchise, and sees Paul Anthony Kelly as the son of President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Sarah Pidgeon as the fashion executive for Calvin Klein.

FX previously said the season, which is inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, charts the "complex and heartbreaking journey of a couple whose private love became a national obsession."

Following a whirlwind romance, the couple tied the knot on Sept. 21, 1996, in a secret ceremony held on the exclusive Cumberland Island in Georgia at the First African Baptist Church.

It took six months of meticulous planning to pull off the wedding without tipping off the media, requiring "the skill of James Bond and the whole CIA," Letitia Baldrige, former White House social secretary to John's mother, told PEOPLE.

Their ups and downs play out in the drama series, including an episode about an anonymous letter John received that threatened their romance after it accused Carolyn of using him for his "fame and fortune."

Some, like JFK Jr.’s nephew Jack Schlossberg, have spoken out against the series, calling it a “grotesque display” of his family’s life.

In February, Pidgeon told PEOPLE the backlash "reinforced and reminded me of just how beloved these people are, and people are protective of their story."

"I don't think it changed how I approached the role. It didn't change my impression of who Carolyn was," she said. "It reminded me of the weight of this responsibility and wanting to do these people justice."

Love Story is now streaming on Hulu.
