The PGA Championship tees off Thursday at Aronimink Golf Club outside of Philadelphia on Thursday and Tiger Woods will not be there.
Right now, nobody knows if he will ever be back.
Woods is believed to be in a 90-day rehabilitation program in Zurich, Switzerland, receiving physical and psychological treatment following his March 27 arrest on a DUI charge in Jupiter Island, Florida. He has not competed since The Open Championship in July 2024. He missed the Masters for the second straight year. He had registered for the U.S. Senior Open hours before the crash. That is now obviously in serious doubt.
The 50-year-old is eligible to play at Aronimink as a four-time PGA Championship winner. He won this tournament in 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007. He has 15 major titles in all, second only to Jack Nicklaus’s 18. At one time, it seemed certain Woods would surpass the legend, but now the question is just whether he will play again.
Woods’ last major title was the 2019 Masters, seven years ago. It was one of the most emotional moments in sports. It also came after an 11-year drought following his 2008 U.S. Open win.
The March 27 arrest came after a single –vehicle accident on a residential road in Jupiter Island. Woods passed a breathalyzer but refused a urine test. Deputies found two hydrocodone pills in his pocket. He was charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.
Four days later, he posted on Instagram. “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” he wrote. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.”

It was the second major car accident of his career.
In February 2021 his SUV left a steep stretch of road in Los Angeles; it struck a tree and rolled multiple times. He was left with compound fractures in his right leg and a shattered ankle.
He made an emotional return from that serious accident after multiple surgeries and a grueling rehab.
Woods has never said he is done, but this time, the questions go beyond just physical recovery and age.
His DUI case in Martin County, Florida, is estimated to take six to nine months to resolve. The outcome will have an effect on his career and what comes next.

The PGA Championship will go on this week without him. The game has been going on without him for years, but the question about whether he is officially gone hangs over almost every major. Right now, nobody knows when or if he will return.
