- On June 2, 2023, Ajike Owens was shot and killed by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, in Florida.

- Netflix's *The Perfect Neighbor *revisits the case and its impact on Owens' children.

- Owens' four kids now live with their grandmother and continue to process the trauma of their mother's murder.

For nearly two years before the shooting death of Ajike "AJ" Owens, tensions had been brewing between Owens and her neighbor, Susan Lorincz.

Lorincz frequently called the police to complain about Owens' children playing in an open field near her apartment. According to NBC News, neighbors alleged that Lorincz hurled racial slurs and insults at the kids, filmed them, and even waved guns in their direction.

On June 2, 2023, their long-running feud came to a tragic end when Lorincz shot and killed Owens through her locked front door.

Now, Netflix's *The Perfect Neighbor*, a documentary directed by Geeta Gandbhir, revisits the case through police bodycam footage, 911 calls, and courtroom video. The documentary is dedicated to Owens' legacy and her four kids: Isaac, Israel, Afrika, and Titus.

Here's everything to know about Owens' kids and where they are now.

On the night of June 2, 2023, Lorincz called police to report that the neighborhood kids, including Owens' children, were trespassing and harassing her. However, witness accounts and coverage featured in *The Perfect Neighbor* suggest that Lorincz escalated the situation. When Israel, a.k.a. Izzy, went to retrieve a tablet he'd left in the field, Lorincz allegedly threw a roller skate near him and reportedly broke the tablet.

The children went home and told Owens what had happened. Accompanied by Izzy, she went to Lorincz's apartment to confront her. While they stood outside, Lorincz shot Owens through her front door.

Izzy was standing next to his mother when she was fatally shot. His older brother Isaac also saw the shooting and, per the documentary, called 911 and sought help from another neighbor.

At the time of her death, Owens was a 35-year-old Black single mother to children who ranged in age from 3 to 12, per the *Ocala Gazette*.

"Ajike, as a mom, she was *the *mom," said one neighbor in the documentary. "She was a manager for McDonalds. You know, Ajike would switch her schedule around … just so she could be there for her kids. Someone who sacrificed for the children to have private school, football lessons, gymnastics, dance, everything."

In a recent interview with CNN, Owens' mother, Pamela Dias, described her daughter as "joyful, vibrant, and devoted to her four children." Dias added, "She was supermom. She was the football mom … She worked hard to provide a better life for them."

Lorincz's trial began in August 2024, and according to ABC News, Owens’ two oldest sons, Isaac and Izzy, were named as potential witnesses. At the time, Dias said that she hoped her grandsons didn't have to take the stand, but noted that "if this is what it takes to get justice, and this is what we have to do."

Ultimately, neither Isaac nor Izzy were called to testify. In the end, a jury found Lorincz guilty of manslaughter via firearm. In November 2024, Lorincz was sentenced to 25 years in prison. She is currently serving her sentence at the Homestead Correctional Institution in South Florida.**

Since Owens' murder, her four kids have been living with their grandmother, Dias. The emotional toll of losing their mother so young has been profound.

In *The Perfect Neighbor*, Dias revealed that Isaac and Izzy have deep guilt and blame themselves for what happened. "The oldest two boys, they feel guilty," she said. "[Izzy] stated that if he had never left his tablet behind, that his mother would still be here. [Isaac] feels guilty because he wasn't able to perform CPR on his mom."

One year after her death, Owens' loved ones came together to honor her life. Owens' children took part in the memorial, with one of them reading a heartfelt poem: "My mom is my hero. Forever will she be in my heart," they said, per Fox 35 Orlando.

The tribute also included dancing in her memory. "(I) feel that they were dancing for their mom, and she was smiling down on them," Dias told the outlet.

Dias recently spoke with *Metro* and shared that her grandchildren are doing their best to move forward.

"The hurt hasn't subsided. There's a void in their hearts no one can fill," she said. "They're the bravest people I know. They get up every day and go forward, but they still mourn and weep for their mother. This is trauma they'll carry for the rest of their lives."

Dias also told CNN that Owens' presence lives on through the kids. "I can see the values my daughter instilled in them – her kindness, her love, her faith – and that means they carry a piece of her wherever they go."

As for Dias, she currently runs the Standing in the Gap Fund, a nonprofit she co-founded to honor her daughter's legacy. The organization works to support families affected by racial and gun violence while also pushing for changes to policies like Stand Your Ground laws.
