Savannah Guthrie, 54, is an American journalist and broadcaster known for bringing Americans together for special moments. Many of her fans and followers are paying close attention following the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie. The anchor announced on Feb. 3 she would no longer be in Milan to cover the 2026 Winter Olympics; the opening ceremony kicks off Friday, Feb. 6, as the search for her mother continues.

Early life to broadcast career
Guthrie was born in 1971 in Melbourne, Australia. Two years later, the family landed in Tucson, Arizona, where her mother was living at the time of her possible kidnapping. In 2015, Savannah and her mother journeyed back to Australia for a special "Today" show look at where she was born.
She studied journalism at the University of Arizona, graduating in 1993. She worked for local broadcast stations before returning to her studies at the Georgetown University Law Center, where she graduated in 2002 with a Juris Doctor. She earned the top score on the Arizona Bar Exam in 2002, according to the UA School of Journalism.
Guthrie was the legal affairs correspondent based in Washington, DC for Court TV from 2006 to 2007, according to NBC. Guthrie joined NBC in 2007, reporting on politics and trials across the country, and later she covered the White House from 2008 and 2011. She was also co-anchor of the MSNBC program "The Daily Rundown" with Natalie Morales and Al Roker before she earned the "Today" co-anchor chair next to Matt Lauer in 2012. Lauer was fired in 2017 due to sexual misconduct allegations. Hoda Kotb replaced Guthrie's co-host in 2018 to make the show's first all-female line-up.

Kotb departed in 2025, and Guthrie has co-anchored with Craig Melvin since January 2025.
Guthrie is known for guiding Americans through many historic moments. She has anchored the Olympics, the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting. Guthrie also moderated a 2020 president election town hall and has interviewed countless major figures including President Donald Trump in 2011 and 2020.
She has published children's books and was named one of Time Magazine's Most Influential People in 2018.

Personal life
Guthrie married Mark Orchard in 2005, and the couple split in 2009. She married again to Michael Feldman in 2014, and the couple have two children. In July 2025, she opened up about her divorce from Orchard, saying the end of the marriage "broke my heart."
In January 2026, she stepped away from the show due to vocal cord surgery.
