Whoopi Goldberg has suggested that she’d exit The View as moderator if she had more money.
“I don’t know if I’d still be doing the show,” the EGOT-winning star told Keke Palmer on the latter’s podcast.
Goldberg also teased that, since joining the program in 2007, she’s “been crazy-glued to that chair!”
After revealing that her hefty paycheck is one thing she adores about her nearly 20-year run onThe View, EGOT-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg has suggested that she’d leave the long-running talk show if she had even more money.
Though Goldberg has a number of awards-based records (and accolades) to her credit, the 70-year-old Hollywood icon said on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast (below), “I love the check.”
She clarified, “Every accolade I’ve received, I’m grateful for. But it doesn’t always translate into work. It’s nice that I have all those things. But, do I constantly have to say to people, ‘I’d like to work with you?’ Yeah, because I don’t come right up in your mind. I’m not the first one you think of.”
Part of potential collaborators’ hesitation, she said, is that they think she’s locked into a rigid schedule during her daily live-show duties with The View.
“I constantly say to people, ‘Yes, I’m still open for this.’ And especially now, because people say, ‘Well, you’re on The View, you can’t do anything.’ If I need to go, I go,” Goldberg admitted. And she’s done just that in the past, particularly taking breaks to film an Italian soap opera in recent months, and taking an extended hiatus from the talk show to film the since-shelved TV series adaptation of Anansi Boys.
Goldberg stressed that “very few of us [actors] are actually making the kind of money you’re reading about,” and suggested that, if she had more money, she might leave The View altogether.
“Because if I had that kind of money — and I love my job — I don’t know that I’d still be doing it,” she said. “I don’t know that I’d still be doing the show. But, a girl’s gotta eat, and I never married well, so, I still have to support myself!”
Elsewhere on Palmer’s podcast, Goldberg teased the size of her View salary as Palmer inquired about what Goldberg loves about doing daytime television.
“The check,” Goldberg replied. “I love the check.”

As Palmer pressed her on the amount, Goldberg said, “No, no, you can’t [imagine],” and even said, “Trust me. You can’t. You would be shocked.”
Goldberg added: “As soon as they showed you that check, you’d be like, ‘What the!?’”

The Ghost and Sister Act star added that she took The View gig in 2007 because she “needed a job” at the time.
“Barbara offered me a job. She said, ‘We just lost one of the people on the show, would you consider coming over?’ And I’d been doing a radio show, and I said, ‘Absolutely, yeah!’” Goldberg recalled of late journalist Barbara Walters personally requesting her to moderate the show after Rosie O’Donnell left that year. “She brought me over, and it’s like I’ve been crazy-glued to that chair!”

Goldberg said that, while she loves the check, she’s grateful for employment in general.
“I see my family, and I see pictures of folks, and I think, ‘Oh, yeah, it’s good to have a job.’ And I come to work,” she said of her pre-show ritual at home. “A lot of people don’t have jobs, so, I’m lucky. I like to talk, I like talking about stuff, I like people. And I’m okay with what I think I believe. I don’t mind doing that. Even when it irritates people? That’s what the show is. It’s not irritation, necessarily, but it is called The View.”
