In February 2026, a DNA test confirmed that Casey O'Connor's cousin, Alana Horton, is actually her sister and that her late uncle was her biological father
The revelation came after a family suspicion resurfaced in 2020, prompting her to finally seek answers about her identity and family history
Now, O'Connor is documenting the experience on TikTok, and she has since connected with others navigating similar DNA discoveries
For more than 30 years, Casey O'Connor and Alana Horton grew up more like sisters than cousins in New South Wales, Australia — sharing everything but last names. Their houses were next door, they had the same interests and their childhoods were deeply intertwined.
"We spent every school holiday together playing dress-up and making up silly dance routines that we'd perform for our families," O'Connor, 36, tells PEOPLE. "She was my best friend."
Over time, family, friends and even strangers would point out how alike the two looked and how natural their bond seemed, but she and Horton, 35, would always laugh it off.
"I always put it down to us being cousins, who can also share a similar resemblance," O'Connor admits. "Little did I know there was a lot more to the story."
After decades of believing they were just cousins, however, O'Connor would eventually discover that Horton is actually her half-sister — and that the man she had known her entire life as her uncle was, in fact, her biological father.
Growing up, O'Connor always thought her family tree was straightforward. Horton was the daughter of her mother's sister and husband, making them first cousins. It was a relationship she never questioned.
The first crack in that understanding, however, came unexpectedly in 2020 when Horton called her one day while she was at work and introduced a possibility that had never crossed her mind before.
"She told me that I'm gonna want to go and sit down somewhere quiet. And I thought, 'Here we go,'" O'Connor said in one of her multi-part TikTok series. "[Horton] proceeded to tell me that her mum had confessed to her that she had suspected my mum of having an affair with her husband around the time that I was conceived."
The information was startling, but at the time, O'Connor wasn't ready to fully confront what it could mean.
"I think I tried to laugh it off at first," she tells PEOPLE. "It was, of course, a massive shock, but I almost swept it under the rug, putting it down to just another one of my family's crazy stories."

During that period in time, O'Connor was facing significant personal challenges, including struggles with her mental health, which made it difficult to process such a life-altering question.
"In a way, I think I compartmentalised it and pushed it to the back of my mind," she admits. "I was struggling with poor mental health and low self-esteem, and it wasn't until I started going to therapy that I finally decided to find out the truth."
It wasn't until 2024, after being diagnosed with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) — a severe hormone-related mood disorder — and beginning therapy, that O'Connor felt ready to revisit the questions she had pushed aside for years.
As she underwent medical testing and started looking more closely at her family health history, she realized there were significant gaps in what she knew about her biological background. Wanting answers for both her health and her own sense of identity, she decided it was finally time to uncover the truth.

To do that, she turned to DNA testing in February 2025. The man who had raised her and whom she still considers her dad agreed to take an Ancestry DNA test alongside her, and when the results came back, it was confirmed that they were not biologically related.
Although the news was significant, O'Connor says she had already begun preparing herself for the possibility. While waiting for the results, she found herself revisiting old family photographs and noticing things she had never paid attention to before — like the great difference in their smile.

Exactly a year later, a second DNA test involving Horton would ultimately confirm what they had both begun to suspect: they were half-sisters.

Coming to terms with that reality has been an ongoing process, but O'Connor says there has also been something unexpectedly beautiful about the discovery.
"One positive to come out of this is knowing that my childhood best friend was actually my sister the whole time," O'Connor shares. "It has explained our strong bond and brought us closer on a whole other level."
Rather than feeling like she lost decades of sisterhood, O'Connor views the situation differently.
Because the two spent so much of their lives together already, she doesn't see the revelation as stolen time. Instead, she sees it as a chance to deepen a relationship that was already one of the most important in her life.
The discovery also reshaped other family relationships. Both her mother and biological father have since died, leaving some questions forever unanswered. But one relationship that never changed was the one she shares with the man who raised her.
"He has been my biggest supporter through all of this, and throughout my whole life," O'Connor says. "He's a real rock, and I know I can always depend on him."

And although years of uncertainty took a toll on her mental health and contributed to anxiety, depression and low self-esteem, O'Connor says finding answers ultimately lifted a burden she had been carrying for far longer than she realized.
Part of that healing process has come through sharing her experience online, where she began documenting the DNA journey and updating followers as new information emerged.
"Speaking to a trusted therapist helped me lift a lot of the emotional weight I'd been carrying," she explains. "I've also been sharing my story on TikTok, and so many people have reached out with similar stories of their own. It's made me feel a lot less alone in all of this."

Today, O'Connor continues to share updates about her life, family and personal growth publicly. While the truth about her family history changed her understanding of the past, it hasn't changed the people she loves or the support system surrounding her.
"My family means the world to me, and having their support through all of this has meant everything," she emphasizes.
As her story continues to resonate with millions of viewers, O'Connor hopes it encourages others facing similar situations to speak openly about their experiences, seek support when they need it, and remember they are not alone.
"I'm an open book, I'm not ashamed or embarrassed about any of it. This is something I had no control over," O'Connor tells PEOPLE. "If sharing it encourages even one person to stop bottling something up, then I'm glad I could help."
