Zachary Levi is speaking out after a tense moment linked to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner created confusion online. The actor addressed the situation directly, explaining what he witnessed and how the situation unfolded, as speculation quickly spread across social media following reports of a possible incident.
Zachary Levi breaks silence on WHCD shooting incident
Levi described the situation as a “commotion” rather than a confirmed shooting, pushing back on early online claims that exaggerated what happened. He explained to USA Today that there was visible panic in the area, but information was unclear at the time.
Levi shared that everything began with a sudden noise that immediately caught attention. “We were sitting at the table, and there was some loud banging that definitely caught my attention,” he said. He admitted his first thought was uncertain, adding he jokingly felt it “kind of sounds like gunshots,” but stressed it was not confirmed at that moment.
As the situation escalated, Levi described how quickly the room reacted. “The next thing we saw, everybody started to turn and drop,” he said. He added that people began hiding under tables while “the Secret Service was pouring in” to secure key officials and evacuate them as fast as possible.

The actor said the scene later calmed down, but confusion remained. “Everyone started popping up from the tables. We didn’t know what was going on,” he explained. That uncertainty made things even more tense, as guests waited for updates while trying to understand whether the danger had passed.
Levi also questioned decisions made in the aftermath. He recalled being told the event might continue, which did not sit right with him. “It’s very confusing because if it were an actual active live shooting, then I don’t know why we would necessarily be continuing with the dinner,” he said, suggesting the response felt unclear in the moment. Authorities later confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody, and the event was ultimately called off.
